A selection of Camino Jewellery
2014 in Viana do Castelo I ate at 2 wonderful places: Casa Primera where fisherman ate delicious huge portions generally of fish and cheap; more upmarket but with a simple daily menu was O Laranjeira. The dining room was handsome with white linen, the Portuguese food creative and delicious. ...These remain delicious memories.

There exist two places with the name O Laranjeiro in Viana do Castelo
A bigger hotel and a smaller pensão (pension / boarding house) I think you mean the pensão due to “ the diningroom was handsome you mentioned.
we stayed in the pensão what was great.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

Albertinho,
Yes the hot link in blue refers to the small pensão. My husband and I stayed and ate very well there. Glad that you also enjoyed it.

Yes the blue linked one was it.
From the owners , a couple , the husband had walked the caminho.
They were very friendly and helpfull.

Two restaurants that stand out for me are Puerto Guardes along the waterfront in A Guarda and Hotel Chef Rivera in Padrón. A Guarda is known for its seafood and my wife enjoyed the prawns and mussels. I did well with steak and mushroom sauce. Hotel Chef Rivera (which is both a hotel and restaurant) served a great baked scallops and vegetable potpourri for her, steak and Galician broth soup for me. Both are nice places with friendly staff.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Much appreciated, kenwilltravel. Thank you for these tips, as well as all the great info in your books.

Also in VdC I've always found the history of this ship and cod to be a fascinating account of renovation and repurpose.
I don't know if you can still tour it, but if so, the tour of the hospital ship Gil Eannes is great fun, fascinating, and gives a real sense of the average person's life in Portugal in the 50s, 60s and early 70s. Fishermen would leave, to fish off Newfoundland on the east coast of Canada, for the entire season, fishing in tiny dories.

Here's a 1967 CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) video about this:

The Gil Eannes, largely maintained by retired fishermen from that era, is an amazing historical artifact!

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Thanks, ICBWB. If you have a few spare hours in A Guarda (and still possess some energy after a day of walking), you might also consider taking a quick taxi ride up the hill that overlooks the town and visit the ruins of a first century B.C. Celtic settlement: https://www.turismo.gal/que-facer/top-ten-dez-lugares-unicos/castro-de-santa-tegra?langId=en_US
You get a great view of the surrounding region from the summit. Buen Camino!

Hi,

I second the hospital ship in Viana, add a stroll around the fort too.

Baiona is nice too, another ship to visit, and another fort.

I skipped Caminha et A Guarda, the first because I got set over from the Orbitur campsite (5euro), at the other side I followed the river and coast again (instead of direct route, very much enjoyed that, there's an art project with ancient signs on trees). A Guarda I just didnt feel, I kept walking north and spent two nights at the lovely albergue LaCala in Oia.

loved the first part of the Espiritual (day 1 and 2) but would recommend to make sure you have a boat as the walk out is definitely lacking charm.

Enjoy, there's good food everywhere, often in the small side streets of side streets.

buon camino

The restaurant in the Matosinhos Hotel was very good. A local woman, whom we met on a route in France, takes business clients there frequently.

Looks like a good plan. I'll be following you and this thread so I can refer back to it once I start walking from Porto in September. Buen Camino!!

Join our full-service guided tour and let us convert you into a Pampered Pilgrim!
Make sure you check out the Port Wine Institute - amazing port list and historic building. (in Porto) Also - in lots of cafes in Porto have a 'Frankosinho' - it is the biggest snack you will ever get - definitely to be tried once..... (it has several meats, cheese, eggs, chips and gravy - so be hungry!)
Obvs in Padron have the peppers!!
Vino Verde all the way.....enjoy!

Vila do Conde - Restaurante Republica
Ponte de Lima - Petiscas

I had very memorable, huge meals of cod and potatoes at these 2 locations. And I'm not even a fan of seafood at all! But my lord, they were delicious, filling meals. HIGHLY recommend.

St James' Way - Self-guided 4-7 day Walking Packages, Reading to Southampton, 110 kms
Also buffet breakfast at Pousada in Viana do Costelo. Catch the cable car up to the church (there's a wonderful albergue next to the church as well - the views are magnificent and the space is so lovely - probably my favourite bathrooms on any Camino -it's the small things) and then a short uphill hike to the Pousada. Buffet breakfast was delicious with great variety.

The small restaurants in the side streets of Viana do Castelo are fantastic
Most of the restaurants in the main square in Caminha are good
In Santiago de Compostela, the Parador's set menu lunch for Euro 20 was really good.
In Porto, if you want top notch, try O Paparico
