When I leave home tomorrow I'll be taking my back pack onto the plane with me and my trekking poles and liquids will get checked in. I've packed those into mailing tubes.

OK, so what about coming home?

I know many people put the poles inside their back pack and just check-in the whole pack, but I'm concerned the pack might get damaged and also the lack of security.

At Madrid Airport do they have a plastic wrapping service for luggage? It would protect the pack a bit better...

We've always checked our packs and so far, touch wood, not had a problem. I turn the harness inside out so the waist belt cinches around the pack, and tighten all the straps. A roll of duct tape can also be used to neaten it all - if you are worried you can virtually wrap the whole thing in duct tape. Just make sure the top handle is free, so baggage handlers have something obvious to lift.

A couple of times we've put the whole pack inside one of the red blue and white woven plastic bags bought from a $2 store. Makes them easy to see on the luggage carousel. Easy to buy in Spain - $2 stores seem to stock the same merchandise all over the world.

PS I'm getting very excited. Hope you are too! We are still trying to work out how to get to the airport three hours ahead of our 6am flight. Too early for trains or shuttle buses and changeover times for taxis......

"lack of security" ... what exactly do you have in your pack?

There is not, as far as I am aware, a market for post-camino socks. Even if you did wash them.

Robo, you must be excited! Feeling happy for you....
I put my pack in a cheap and light duffel bag, then when I got to Pamplona I posted it ahead to Ivar in Santiago, with some things that I needed in Santiago but not along the way. Doing this also gave me a bit of extra luggage space on the way back.
On the flights, my poles went on the outside of the pack, no problem.

I'm purchasing my poles in St. Jean, as I don't wish to check my backpack from Canada; too many instances of lost luggage in my many travels. Bringing them home, I'm so concerned.

I haven't been to Madrid in a few years but 5 years ago they had a bunch of places to get bags wrapped up in cellophane type material @ the Airport.

Correction; bringing my poles back to Canada, I am NOT so concerned about checking them. Purchasing them in St. Jean seemed the logical answer to my concern about checking my backpack to Madrid.

Have a great time Robo. There was plastic wrapping available in Madrid last October. We put our wooden staffs in a fishing rod fabric container and they met us safe and sound in Brisbane. We also sent them over that way. Buen Camino (every day we think and talk about our Camino)

I buy an inexpensive suitcase in Santiago. Make sure it is hard covered and large enough to distribute your stuff. Check it then sit back and enjoy your flight!
