Pound seems to have had a couple of decent years versus Euro so just taken a look with a trip to Spain impending! I wish I hadn’t! UK folks take note might need a few extra quid!

The 9th edition the Lightfoot Guide will let you complete the journey your way.
Value always goes up and down (as high as 1.72 and as low as 1.03) but it had grown from 1.1 to 1.2 ish in last two years or so. Very high inflation in Spain too so a few pound more may help!

For the majority of forum members [edited later to add for clarity :rolleyes:: whose own expenses may be influenced by the GBP/EUR exchange rate and who may be interested in this topic], the reference period will not be the past two years as they did not go on Camino in Spain but the year 2019, the last year with a "full camino" 😉.

I got curious and looked at the exchange rate charts for pound to euro:

8 May 2022: 1.16
8 May 2019: 1.16 (and even lower for the whole pilgrimage season until November 2019)
Seen from this reference point, the exchange rate is no reason for alarm. Inflation is currently high in Spain and a few percentage points higher than in the UK but it is to a large part energy driven, as it is in much of Europe. Prices for pilgrim menus and albergue dormitories do not seem to have gone through the roof, from what I can tell - I followed a recent thread where prices were posted. For most people, two weeks or a month in Spain on Camino will remain to be cheap as far as their expenses in Spain go, I'd guess.

It is all relative...in the same period, both, £ and € have lost terribly against the Swiss Franc and other currencies. Weather and exchange rates change are common smalltalk subjects, but are they really necessary?

At least as necessary or unnecessary as the cost of withdrawing euros from ATMs in Spain or the threads about how much to budget on average per day on Camino. IOW, interesting and even necessary for some and boring and unnecessary for others. Given the composition of the forum membership, I'd rank the interest and necessity of exchanging posts about changing exchange rates in this order:

1. $ -> €,
2. £ - > €,
3. all other currencies -> €.

🙃

BTW, my personal interest is £ < - > €, and I could not care less about the rest but usually don't feel a need to announce this. 😇

Thank you … very informed post as always. Sorry wasn’t looking to raise any alarms…more aimed at UK folks who may have been doing a lot of European travel last year or so (many UK folks have switched from longhaul travel to intra European travel during covid) and may now be returning to Camino.

I have been out of UK and Eurozone last few months so when I looked at rate I was quite shocked!

That's not all I just got back a few days ago after completing the Camino Frances and found Spain is more expensive than what it used to be ..the pharmacy is expensive by 400-500% so before you set off go to something like the poundshop (American version of the dollar store ) and get the basics like painkillers , cream for the feet , then superdrug for compression bandage for the knees as they may come in handy..I got 2 for £6 yet in Spain they were around 15€ for one ...for food at the supermarket that's much higher than the UK too ..so just be aware of the prices .

Like you, I examine the exchange rate quite a lot but one thing’s for sure, in Spain on the VDLP I’ve eaten a tasty three course menu del dia with wine & water for as little as €7.00 and in England I couldn’t get a standard glass of wine for that price.

Good to hear… there is the odd value option in UK but yes Spain feels a lot cheaper for food/ drinks
