Where to Find Walking Sticks in SJPP for the Frances Route

We are walking the Frances this summer. I'd like to buy a walking stick to begin in SJPDP.

Does anyone know where I could find one?

Best IMO is a natural ash staff, made from a sapling, slightly taller than foot to armpit -- but the good ones are sadly hard to find, as most stick pickers fashion them to have thicker edge up, thinner down ; which is the opposite of good practice.

The larger area of the thicker end is best for the terrain, and the thinner end tends to be well grasp-shaped.

I bought one in Roncevalles. But it was much heavier than my trekking poles. After 2 days I developed huge bruises on my right arm on the bicep. I couldn’t understand it as i was having no problems with my pack. By day 4 the bruise was worse and I realized it was the walking stick, so I switched back to hiking poles.
You may have more upper body strength than me, or be much younger- im 63 and female- but trekking poles do work much better.

It's cheap if you lose it.
It just gives me that one extra "leg" I need for balance in the very few sections along the Frances I feel I need help. Going DOWN into Roncesvalles and DOWN into Zubiri and DOWN the other side of Perdon. Otherwise, I really don't like carrying sticks, I've decided.
I'm 70 and female.
We're all different.

I'm with you! I don't know how many walkers I saw using their sticks on flat ground and then carrying them down steep, rocky descents! I use one hiking pole, not a wooden stick, but the same general idea. My Osprey pack has a nifty place to store it when not in use.

Thx! I ve tried the hiking poles and right now they are not for me. I don't use a stick except going down hills. It helps me when the trail is steep and rocky.

You might find they will have a few to give you.
Many a pilgrim who commenced in France ( GR 65 ) or other outposts left their sticks in SJPP.

Hi Beth & Rodney, I always have the same problem as the flight takes them away so I don't bring em and buy at any of the shop in SJPP. I then leave them for another pilgrim along the way at the end.
