Question about Roman road route from Calzadilla de los Hermanillos to Mansilla de las Mulas

Hi All,

I’m staying in Calzadilla de los Hermanillos tonight, and have decided to take the long stretch of Roman Road to Mansilla de las Mulas tomorrow. I’ll be well stocked up on water, sun cream and snacks!
My question is: do I pass through Reliegos on this Roman road route or will it be straight to Mansilla with literally nothing?!

I have to say, this was my worst day of walking in 3 caminos - take plenty of water. I walked when it was hot, there was no cover for hours - just ploughed fields and dust blowing.

I also felt nervous walking this stretch(at 72) but really there is nothing to worry about. I thoroughly enjoyed the walk. Go for it.

It is a great walk. I felt the emptiness of this huge landscape and I felt connected to the history of that road in that stage! All the best!

We walked the Roman Road during our second camino in 2017. After we left Calzadilla and hiked a long way along that route, we became frustrated about the lack of fountains, benches, shade trees or intermediate towns along the route. We could see pilgrims hiking the route from Bercianos, which we had hiked in 2015. We felt it was a much better trail, so we found a path to cross over a rail road track, then we rejoined the other path. Good decision! Bob

It’s wide open country, with rare shade and water… just what you need to daydream away, and very little pavement!

I thought about doing that, but couldnt see how to get to the track. Maybe I started looking too late in the walk.
Then In Religous, the hospilatera was too busy watching the football, so dinner was cancelled, and the next morning I was really hungry.

I had the same experience it was a total nightmare in extreme heat and no cover, one of the worst experiences I had on all my caminos.
It was also pretty boring Roman road fenced off covered in grass it was a few years ago but sticks in my memory as a never ever again moment.

Did exactly the same absolutely no point in this diversión.

That is precisely why I liked it so much. No nada. Just a way to be walked, without the circus trappings of the current Camino Frances. The alternative is along a soul-deadening senda. No thanks!
But this was early April. This time of year it would be much hotter.

Hi, I’ve done this and it’s a lesser followed pearl of the Camino. You do pass through Reliegos and there’s a chance of a drink and a rest. Just do it. The isolation and scenery are the reward.

I left at 6.30am and was in Reliegos at around 10.15am. I really enjoyed the walk - nobody else around and not too hot at that time of day. It went really quickly and I enjoyed the solitude.
I was keen to find a bar and relax with a very cold drink in Reliegos but unfortunately nothing is open!

i need to decide if I am going to do the same. There is a lot of negativity about taking the Roman road. What are your thoughts since you did it recently. I am 62 and will be walking alone. I know about no water, no shade etc.

It's like being transported for one day onto the Extramadura part of the Via de la Plata. If you are curious about what much of walking the VDLP would be like, then try it.

I don't remember much shade on either route.

Great photo! I’ve always walked the “Roman” road. I’ve loved the solitude as most seem to scuttle the “official” route. I’ve dropped in / diverted to Reliegos and had some fun with Elvis and I’ve ploughed on to Mansanilla staying north of the railway.

I agree. We took the Roman Road. We took the road less traveled, embraced the austerity and simple beauty of the Meseta, dwelled on the history of the land, and loved it.
