Maybe because $100US a billing cycle could mean $200 over the course of a month spending upon when a trip falls on the cycle? Versus $10 for a Spanish SIM card.
To be fair, there are differences between spending $200 for a month-plus international plan from one's domestic carrier and buying a $10 Spanish SIM card besides price, including convenience and amount of data included.
The $10 SIM card is certainly inexpensive but I can't imagine it includes much data, which may be an issue for anyone who intends to use their plan for uploading photos or downloading maps (for example), and having a temporary Spanish phone number may cost the folks back home more money when calling or texting. The $100/month international plans include unlimited data (which yes, may be throttled in certain situations, as mentioned above) and the convenience of retaining the same phone number as one uses at home - both of which might be worth the added expense for some of us. Like many things discussed in these forums, there's no one solution that works for everyone.
