Most refuges are open all year but it is worth checking in the guide books to check which refuges close for the winter.
L'Epirit du Chemin in St Jean is open from 1st April to 30th September. The volunteers at Roncesvalles told us that the refuge there, like many other refuges, is closed from the end of October until May. (Perhaps this is why nobody answered his banging on the doors when poor Santos stumbled into Roncesvalles at midnight after struggling in the snow from St Jean Pied de Port in April this year??)

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
The volunteers at Roncesvalles told us that the refuge there, like many other refuges, is closed from the end of October until May.
That's certainly one to take note of, as the CSJ and other guides say the Roncesvalles albergue is open all year, but only staffed in the summer months.

I stayed in Roncesvalles this year at early April. More than 100 pilgrims with me.

The day before was died an english pilgrim between St. Jean and Roncesvalles.

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
The Confraternity of St James has confirmed that the refuge does stay open in the winter months. The Netherlands volunteers only work there from November to April but the monks receive pilgrims in the winter. My apologies for the incorrect info - I misunderstood the hospitalero who told me (in Dutch) that they are closed from end of October to May).
