reservations for gites in France

How does one go about booking a reservation for a gite in France. Does the owner of the Gite you are staying in phone ahead for you for the next day? Amber

Gite

I stayed in a Gite just outside of St.John P.P. is this where you want to stay? Yes, you can get reservations, I didn't have any. No they don't phone ahead.
 
Reserving gites in France

I've read that in every gite you stay in from Le Puy to SJPP that you must have a reservation and so I was wondering how this process works. Every day I will have to phone ahead to reserve a space. Since I don't speak French well, I would like to know what I will be required to do or say when I want to book a bed for the following night. Do the people who run these gites help you reserve a bed for the following night or are you on your own when phoning?
