Many pilgrims take a rest day in Conques itself. Between Le Puy and Conques is a string of small towns where you will likely be staying - MMD has the details on available lodging. Any of them would make a nice rest day if you wished - many of them are listed in "The Prettiest Villages in France" so it's quite hard to go wrong. Stop where you like and enjoy it!

I really liked that village too. It is listed as one of the "100 most beautiful villages" in France.

On the Lot River. I have always found the switched consonants curious. Ditto Roland and Roldan.

The river was called the Olt in the Occitan language, used in the South of France.

Lot is the equivalent in "standard/modern" French. Easier to pronounce ?
The specialists call this change a metathesis. Another example is "formage" becoming "fromage".
