Our local newspaper hwere in Jerusalem reports violent riots in Burgos concerning something about a street rezoning or property reassessment(?), 11 people arrested or injured not clear from the report here. Do be careful and proceed cautiously!

This is not good news. Rioting in any form for any reason is always a cause of major concern for the safety of all in the area involved.
For all who are there, be safe and take extra care.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Don't worry. It's only ten person that approach this situation for violence about the city not against persons. It's the street of entrance in Burgos. Almost I don't walk for this only in my arrived.

It seems to be on Calle Vitorio which is the main camino route into the center... river route better option for now?

This situation is like when there is a football game and there are 5 violent people who attack the city. Only happens at night when the protest rallies.

If I was in the vicinity of Burgos, I'd be there in a flash!
Here we have have millions being spent on 'city improvements' while health services and public transport are being cut.
I'd like to say I'd go because I wanted to meet and show support for the locals, and for the police who are always caught in the middle in these situations, and that's part of it.
The other part is because it's an adventure, and I believe that adventure, both mental and physical, is an essential ingredient of a worthwhile life.
That's probably the main reason I decided to go Caminoing.
So get to Burgos pilgrims, buy the locals a drink, show some support, and say hi from me.
Don't be overly careful and don't proceed too cautiously!

after a few days of riots, the major of Burgos has given in and has stopped the development in Gamonal, so there should be no riots now, at least for a while.

Thanks for posting this, nesimo. It really gives a lot of the historical background. When I read about it the first time, it seemed like the residents were complaining about the project for a different reason than what this article describes. It seemed like they were objecting to the fact that this project was going to make life more pleasant for pedestrians than cars. That kind of public works project always gets people mad, especially in car-obsessed and car-dependent places, and planners in the US call it a "road diet." But turns out that´s not really what´s going on, at least according to this article. Seems that it´s more of an anti-corruption outburst, leveled at one developer who has benefitted tremendously from many scandalous public projects, public approvals, etc. And of course there´s also the layer of protest that asks whether now is the time to spend millions on pedestrian infrastructure when so many basic public services are getting cut drastically. Way to go, citizens! Looks like you got some action. Buen camino, Laurie

Construction stopped for now. Talks ongoing.
Pilgrims rarely have anything to worry about, riot-wise. But after decades of covering civil unrest for newspapers, I would advise staying the heck away from anything that looks dicey, even if it looks like your idea of "adventure."
Some people protest as a hobby.
Tear gas is for life.
