Roads or trails?

I'm looking a year ahead to walking the Via Francigena from Lucca to Rome, and wondering what to expect: road walking or trails?

I've done the Northern Camino, which had a mixture of both, and was happy regardless, but did prefer to be off the busy highways.

Thank you in advance!

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
A mix. As far as I remember it much of that section of the VF is on strade bianche - the gravel and clay minor roads that are a big feature of Tuscany and to a lesser extent Lazio. Very little motor traffic on those and what there is tends to be slow moving. Some asphalt and some off-road footpaths too. Very little on busy highways except on the approach into Rome itself - and I believe that the route has been redirected onto quieter roads and paths since I walked in 2015.

Yes, I agree with Bradypus, there is a mix. Although I found the mix heavy in favour of road walking by about 70%. It was a relief to get onto some dirt country roads and bush paths were rare. Still beautiful though. Mel
