Rome to SJPdP

Hi Guys, I need a few tips on getting from Rome on 14 September to SJPdP. I've done a bit of research and the train is the winner so far and there are two routes; a western trip zig-zagging to the Bayonne or the speed train option to Paris then to Bayonne. I'd appreciate any comments.......including other options.......

What about flying from Rome to Biarritz, 10 km to Bayonne, and taking a train from Bayonne to Sain Jean?

Easy Jet has flights from Rome to Toulouse and Barcelona.

From Barcelona go to Pamplona by bus or train then bus from Pamplona to SJPdP.

From Toulouse go to Bayonne by train then bus or train from Bayonne to SJPdP.

Hello, I have a question along the same lines as Andyroo- I'm planning to come into Bayonne and want to get to SJPP easily also. There seems to be some conflicting information on the internet/ train site as to whether the train goes directly from Bayonne to SJPP or if one has to take the bus because of some recent road closure, or if the train is simply transferring folks onto a bus after the obstruction to complete the trip. Does anybody know about this?

In September the train/bus combo reduces to 3 trips, from Bayonne. 07.14, 11.10 and 18.06.

If the SNCF schedule doesn't do it for you try Transports64 bus 811 from Gare Bayonne to St Palais and bus 810 from St Palais to SJPdP.

You guys realize of course that the complications of starting in SJPdP are entirely self-inflicted. A minority of pilgrims, -mainly from english-speaking countries-, seems to believe that the camino has to start in this obscure village but there is no compelling reason, historical or other-, in doing so. "Starting in France and crossing the border" is a romantic, yet illogic and strange motive, as there is no such border and the few kilometers of walking are no different on either side. This said, the section from SJPdP to Roncesvalles is beautiful (in nice weather), albeit not suitable for untrained, jet-lagged, often overweight, elderly peregrinos, who would be far better off starting in easily reachable, well connected Pamplona, or, -for a REAL experience of "la douce France"-, in Le Puy.

The Via Francigena is said to be wonderful;-)
More seriously, if you get to Bayonne, it's a lovely walk along La Voie de la Nive to get to SJPdP.

That walk from SJPP will be of od those memories I will never forget. Bucket list category. had I not walked it, I woulf have forever regreted it. But it was TOUGH and I was naive, and over weight, but I did it. It took a good 9 hours, but I did it. Breakng it up in Orison never occured to me, but what a great option. That and Hospitales.

Just listened to this weeks webminar on the primitivo and they had a youngish priest talk about e walk he just finished: Tui- Santiago. He talked about his motivation being vanity: if they can, why can't it. And he was talkng about Tui- Santiago. Jst imagine Leopolder. So, if the young priest,understands vanity, please let me indulge and cherish those memories.

Pamplona is far easier to reach than SJPP! Train, bus or plane.

It really is, and cheap by bus.
Last summer I made my bus reservation online (ALSA), printed the boarding pass. Arrived in Madrid, got to T4, hung out for a couple of hours, walked out the terminal and stepped on the bus and a few hours later I was in Pamplona.
Too easy.

It's as easy as an elevator ride down to the "darcenas" from the T4 airport rerminal. Easy peasy.

We add it on to our Iberia international flight and it costs next to nothing - less than the bus fare ( to Pamplona)!

Thanks Navarro. Only trouble is my partner want to 'experience' the Italian and French countryside by train. My vote would have be your option but I came up against resistance.

There might be two reasons

That Movie! It was certainly why I started there. I just liked the places in the movie and the more I researched the Camino (CF) the more the idea stuck.

Secondly........I 'think' it's a somewhat traditional starting place. Codex Calixtinus. Book 5. Which is supposedly the first 'guide' to the Camino, apparently suggests a start in St Jean.
