Hi, last year my wife and I did the Frances from St. Jean to Santiago. Due to heavy snow conditions we had to go the Valcarlos as the Napoleon was closed. This year we would like to start in St. Jean and go over the Napoleon to Roncesvalles. We would then like to go to Irun to begin the Norte. Can anyone tell me whether it is possible to walk from Roncesvalles to Irun, how difficult it is and whether there are albergues along the way. Thanks much.

Very light, comfortable and compressible poncho. Specially designed for protection against water for any activity.

Our Atmospheric H30 poncho offers lightness and waterproofness. Easily compressible and made with our Waterproof fabric, its heat-sealed interior seams guarantee its waterproofness. Includes carrying bag.

€60,-
I'm not sure about walking, but a cursory look at a map suggests it's around 53miles. Otherwise you could walk to Pamplona and get a direct train/bus to Irun.

It it possible. See this detailed French account, Liason Roncesvalles-Irun, which describes walking from Roncesvalles to Irun following in part the east-west Spanish GR11 trail.

The 9th edition the Lightfoot Guide will let you complete the journey your way.
I have not done it, but looked into it some time ago. It is a "Grande Randonnée" (or "Senda Pirenaica" in Spanish) coded GR11. It does not go to Roncesvalles, but crosses the Camino Frances in Burguete, which is close. There is a Wikipedia article with some useful links.
It seems to be a beautiful, but also a really tough walk. No albergues, just hotels and hostals.
Buen camino!

Thanks everyone for your assistance. MSPath, would love to get the information you referred me to, but my French is not good enough. I tried Google Translate but the translation is poor. Oh well!

Would you like me to do a rough and ready translation for you?

For personal/non commercial use I have now abstracted and translated into English sections from the French site Liason Roncesvalles-Irun which describes walking in Spain from Roncesvalles to Irun using both local trails and in part the east-west Spanish GR11 trail.

Is there a chance I could get a copy of that rough translation? I'm trying to figure out how to start on the CF in SJdPP and then get to Irun on foot once over the Pyranese as well

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
