Ruta Maritima

Saturday sees this year's maritime commemoration of the Translation of the body of St James to Galicia, when a fleet of boats converges on Padron, and a religious ceremony is held. This is organised annually by the Fundación Ruta Xacobea do Mar de Arousa e Ulla. I couldn't find a website for them, but there's a report in today's Voz de Galicia http://www.lavozdegalicia.es/ed_santiag ... TO=3912615
More info on the area at http://www.lariadearosa.com/RutaXacobea ... cobea.html and there's some info in English at http://www.xacobeo.es/contido_rutas.asp ... seccion=15

From Padron the route to Santiago is of course the same as the Camino Portugues.

(Ruta de la Mar)
I recall last year that Rosina Lila posted a notice that this route no longer qualifies for a Compostela as it is only 40 nautical miles - Arousa sea and the Ulla river.
It must be quite a spectacle this week!

as I understand it, to qualify for a maritime compostela you have to be able to show you have travelled 40 nautical miles (around 74km), which if you add to the walking distance Padron-Santiago brings you to the 100km. The distance from the entrance to the Ria de Arousa is officially 23 nautical miles, so you would have to start further back to qualify. The odd thing is that there is no restriction on the type of vessel you use, so you can thunder along in your jet-powered catamaran.

This particular festivity is more to Padron than to Santiago - well, actually down the road at Pontecesures, as boats can't get to Padron any more. And the odd thing about this festivity is that the feast of the Translation of St James is supposed to be December 30, the date of St James Day in the Mozarabic rite, and not the middle of summer.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
