My experience with them only once from Bordeaux to Porto was "the rules are the rules." They weigh and measure everything with precision. Make sure you have a properly printed boarding pass or it will cost you extra. Mine wasn't!

No margin I'm afraid. I'm flying in early April with Ryanair to Biarritz and I will spend the extra amount and check my backpack into the hold - I will also put my poles inside, apart from pulling all straps tight I secure the arm straps with some tape.

For me the time it takes to get to the Camino is a time to "decompress" and worrying about my backpack making it onto the plane as cabin luggage would wind me up

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
I have only tested the system personally from santiago to Málaga. There was no problem, but I had visited the airport in advance with my backpack to check it fitted in the measuring cage. First camino I posted my walking poles home, but the second time they were in my pack with no problem.

I travel often with ryanair and see many people boarding with backpacks. you just need to be sure it doesn't exceed the accepted dimensions.

Contact Ryan Air directly with weight and dimensions. Prepare for the worst possible outcome.

Hi there,

It might help to know that Ryanair now allow two 2 cabin bags: one 10kg max, and one smaller 'handbag' size. Given that checked baggage is 15kg, it's actually not that much difference in terms of weight (and if you're travelling with more than 10kg in your backpack you might need to reconsider your camino checklist! ;)

I think the biggest problem concerns baggage dimensions - I frequently travel with Ryanair and have never had a problem with my 37Litre backpack, but they often ask passengers to test the dimensions in the 'size-box' (in case you're interested I managed to stuff it in (phew!), but took a bit of team-work pulling it out again!)

Here's the official info:

http://www.ryanair.com/en/terms-and-conditions/regulations-cabinbaggage/

If you're worried it's probably better to be safe than sorry… If you're travelling in low season, £20 is a (relatively) small price to pay for peace of mind. However I think checked baggage goes up to about £40 in high season, eek!

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
I'm flying from Dublin to Biarritz in April for another Camino. Each occasion in the past I had no difficulty taking my rucksack on board, it weighed about 7KG and also contained one walking pole. Ryanair are becoming a little more flexible, while the rucksack was within weight, it was a couple of CM taller than their size requirements when I inserted it into the bag-check but I've never had any difficulty taking it on board.
