Irish pilgrims may be aware of Camino an tSáile [The Saltwater Way], a film about four Irishmen who recreated the ancient route to Santiago from Ireland by boat. I was very sad to learn that furthering their journey around the Galician coast, the boat capsized and one of the crew, Danny Sheehy, passed away later in hospital. The other three were also taken to hospital.

Camino an tSáile was inspiring in so many ways, and this loss is truly awful. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and the other crew members.

I am so sorry to read this tragic news.

My condolences to all who knew him.

  3. Terrible news - they're known outside Ireland also. Thank you for posting to let others know. They were just in Santiago having lunch with some forum members. Love to his family and best hopes for the other three - I hope they are as well as they can be soon and that there is some way of commemorating their inspiring efforts. There is a pilgrimage museum in Santiago that comes to mind.

I met them at the Sunday lunch, they were all so full of songs, life and dreams and so much looking forward to the next part of their voyage. Sad news and my heart goes out to his family and his three friends that were with him. His last Camino has now started, SY

In the Irish language media he is reported to have 'imithe ar shlí na fírinne' - gone the way of truth. It's an Irish way of saying that you have died. A last Camino indeed :(

Just in from a magnificent day's walking here at home and full of the joys of life until I heard this news. Watched Camino an tSáile and was so proud to see how that group of men brought what was the best in our culture with them across the sea. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam usail. Slàn Danny.

I can't believe this happened. It was just 2 weeks ago that we sent them off. We are so saddened by tragedy. I keep relieving that wonderful lunch and the following day when we helped them get their boat trailered.

I am deeply saddened by this tragic news. I was so inspired by their story. May Danny's friends and family, including his Camino family, find comfort in knowing he could not have lived any closer to his heart and spirit, than he did by making this amazing journey. Peace & blessings for his loved ones.

I have been met with death of close friends too often recently. Just back from yet another Celebration Service just this afternoon. Through it all, I have come to appreciate these wonderful people who contributed directly to my life and those of many, many others.

Some may disagree but it does no one any good to feel sorry for the loss. It is something, very final, that has happened and there is no recourse but to express our sadness, briefly, and help the Family of our Departed by demonstrating the Joy we have received from knowing them.

In today's Service, my friend's middle Son got up last and as part of his eulogie, he told us a story of what happens when an Artist has passed. They all get to their feet and applaud, a standing ovation.

This dedication brought home the point I offer here.

For those who are willing, delve into Danny Sheehy's poetic works. For his best, you may have to tanslate from his native Gaelic. But once you know the man, and what he stood for, stand up, wherever you are in the World, and give him a round of applause, and so will I.

    Well Done.

    Buen Camino

we saw the film and were like yourself found it excellent in many ways.
May he rest in peace and hopefully his comrades will all make full recoveries but when you lose a friend in this way it is a long sad camino back to normality.
