Dear pilgrims, I have a question about salt used in Spain. As I am sensitive to iodine (yodo in Spanish?), would like to know if salt is iodized or not in general in Spain. If yes, will bring some salt without iodine from my home. Will appreciate any information about salt in Spain.
Thank you.

Sal de Mar is not iodized. So called cooking salt (rock salt) usually is. In general the Spanish use Sea Salt but in a catering environment and in most processed foods who knows.

Salt is rarely presented in Spanish eating establishments, you have to ask for it - the assumption is that the chef will have seasoned the food correctly.

A google search of " Sal con Yodo" will lead you to a wealth of information but may not actually answer your question. Good luck

Thank you so much for the right info I need.
Understand it is difficult to know what kind of salt used in processed foods and eating establishments. From the info I know how to choose the right salt when doing my own cooking. Thanks again.

I have to agree that you rarely ever see salt in any type of restaurant...at breakfast there may be one salt shaker in the breakfast room next to a dozen bottles of hot sauce...that is if someone did not already moved the only salt shaker to somewhere you could not find it...but I actually have the opposite problem in that I need a high salt intake to prevent muscle cramps so I brought a camping salt shaker with mountain rock salt with me on my Camino.

I am the other extreme of this problem. I should take as few salt as possible, especially iodized salt, otherwise I will have a swollen neck. Potato peel has iodine as well. I love tortilla which use potato without peel, fortunately.

Don’t know if it’s too late but sea salt has naturally occurring iodine from kelp and other sea weeds. Nori is the primary iodine source in the Japanese diet.
