San Roque ...a novena for healing

Many who have walked have encountered San Roque in Spain ( San Rocco in Italy ) , oftentimes mistaken for St James as he is depicted dressed as a pilgrim. He is seen wearing pilgrim hat, carrying a staff, often with a shell...but he is accompanied by a dog and revealing wounds on his leg. He is the patron saint of disease and healing, epidemics.....All of us can take a look back at our photos and have a closer look at San Roque. We have been called to know him and ask for his intervention during these troubling times.
Here is the Novena ( each day, 9 days )...I've found the words themselves especially healing.
May God keep each one of us and all that surround us safe.

Great St. Rocco, deliver us, we beseech thee, from contagious diseases. Through thy intercession, preserve our bodies from illness, and our souls from the contagion of sin. Obtain for us salubrious air, but, above all, purity of heart. Assist us to make good use of health, to bear suffering with patience, and, after thy example, to live in the practice of penance and charity, that we may one day enjoy the happiness which thou has merited by thy virtues. Daily Prayer - Say: Our Father… Hail Mary… Glory be… Concluding Prayer - St. Rocco, pray for us, that we may be relieved from all diseases of body and soul. (Repeat 3 times)

Thank you. I encountered him on my first camino, Camino Portuguese, and have had a soft spot for him ever since.

There are lots of statues and spots dedicated to him in France. As the patron saint invoked against the plague, lots of spots in Europe got named after him.

I was reliably informed (in another thread many moons ago) that the statue at Alto de San Roque (as shown in OP’s first post) is not of St Roque, but of a generic pilgrim. He never made it to Spain, but did go to Rome.

I wondered why the statue on Alto San Roque didn't look like the San Roque I expected. I thought it was just me...lol Thank you for clarifying. I believe he was born in France...?

His father was somebody important in the Montpellier area. Roch had no interest in being a Lord, causing his kin to figure he was off his rocker, and thus when he returned from Rime, they locked him up forever.

I've read in many sources that the saint was born with a red cross birthmark on his chest. I wonder why it is never depicted on any statues or paintings...well, none I've seen...
