After 38 days and nearly 800 kms (the detour to Samos certainly added on the mileage) later, we arrived in Santiago yesterday morning in time for the pilgrims´mass.
Stumbling out of O´Pino hostal at Rua at 0530 am is not my idea of fun but my husband and two other friends have to leave as soon as we arrive and they would not be around for the mass had we come in late. Surprisingly many like-minded peregrinos started early so before long we have company on the trail. All of us were in fine spirit and fine form. This is the day and we will make it!
After being so long on the road living off the back pack, seeing the same old familiar faces (some dropped off, some more joined in), sharing menu peregrine at the only bar-cafe in the tiny hamlet we spent the night, greeting, smiling (or grunting when the going gets tough)when we passed each other and all those things that slowly build up the fraternity of sort, now it came to the end in the cathedrale when we sat together listening to the nun´s sweet singing voice and the chanting, praying, blessing for all of us peregrinos.
We gave each other a hug and smile. ´¨Buen Camino¨" we repeat for the last time and we are gone.
