Porto to Santiago Sept 2018
Hi,

I wondered what is the best way to get from Santiago to Porto Airport.

I see there is a direct bus which takes nearly 4 hours. There looks to be a couple of trains but on very early and one quite late which are no good for our flight times.

Has anyone managed a quicker way back t the airport in Porto?

Hi Chris,

I couldn't find a better way. Good news is the bus is comfortable and the scenery not so bad for a motorway.

Buen Camino,

Rob.

Hi Chris,
Did you do the walk from Porto to Santiago?
Can you please advise me?
I'm arriving Monday morning 10.9.2018 to Porto to start my walk.
Where do I go from the airport?
Thanks

Thanks Rob,

Did you book the bus ahead of time and are they quite reliable?

Cheers, Chris.

Hi Liliom,

You will be ahead of me, I don't start until later in September.

I intend to walk from the airport. It seems as though that's possible reading the forum.

Good look with your camino!

Hey Chris,

I just turned up on the day (early August) and bought a ticket from the office. Was fairly empty until Braga and then maybe 3/4 full. If you know when you want to travel I think you save a little money booking ahead and guarantee yourself a seat. For the day I travelled service was reliable with fairly empty roads, arriving a few minutes early.

Welcome @Liliom
To start your Camino Portugues I’d suggest you take a bus from airport into the city of Porto to look around. (Not sure how much time you have).
Get your first sello at the cathedral.
So many options to choose from regarding route to take. Have you tried using the ‘search’ function in this forum ? So much info there.
Good luck and Buen Camino

I was starting Monday, now Tuesday! Dogsitting and owner is delayed. If you go to Porto cathedral, there is a tower building with maps and guidance, guy speaks English. Buy your passport inside cathedral. They will stamp it...ice cream shop across the street will stamp it! I might stop by the albergue today and see who’s around!

“Did you do the walk from Porto to Santiago?”

I flew into Porto a month ago to finish the Lisbon to Porto portion from 2016, but the flight arrived 5 hours late, leaving insufficient time to go into Porto from the airport and begin. There is a convenient electric train to the city so I took it to one of its stops and switched to the northbound segment, eliminating the first day. I was meeting my son to hike the Camino west out of Geneva in a few weeks and had little wiggle room.
Once crossing the river into Portugal, the marked route got more crowded as did dining and rest facilities. With summer vacations over, foot traffic should subside.
If you haven’t been to Santiago in a while, the certificate office moved since my first Camino in 2014, El Norte.

i've done them. The most fun and quickest was hitch hiking. But I wouldn't want to depend on it for a flight.

Thanks Rob,

I think the bus will be our best option. It doesn't sound too bad!

Cheers, Chris.

A direct car will take at least 2 1/2 hours! I have not looked at the itinerary, but I suspect the bus will make a few stops. There is too much demand along that route, and too little in Santiago alone, for there to be no diversions to pick up passengers. I have waited in lines for the restroom that seemed to be four hours! :) Enjoy the bus ride.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
