Shave and a Haircut in Santiago?

I will walk from Madrid starting 7 April, and hope to arrive at Santiago de Compostela during the first week of May. When walking a Camino at his time of year, I find that not shaving and growing a beard keeps my face warmer. It also "shaves" (pun intended) some additional weight from my rucksack as my shaving gear is left out.

So, can anyone tell me where in Santiago a fellow with a month's growth of beard, and likely in need of a haircut, can obtain these services in Santiago? A street address would be helpful.

There is a pretty good barber shop across the street from the Burger King on Rúa da Serna about 800 feet directly south of the Cathedral. I got a great shave and haircut there.

This is a good shop and just outside the old city. Actually the back door of the shop opens back into the old city.

I have got haircuts and shaves several times there.

Tom - there are several. The one mentioned just down from the Plaza Galicia and opposite Burger King is good and friendly. Whichever you choose remember they operate on an appointments system unless you are very early and very lucky!

From the image and the information I found, it appears the somewhat blurry green sign is over the entrance to the peluquería (barber shop). Did I find it?

If it is correct, it seems that a smart thing to do, once I am certain what day and time, I might walk into Santiago, is to have someone call for me to make a reservation. Thoughts?

I believe that's the place where I shed my Camino whiskers -- at least it looks about right on the Google map. I just walked in with no appointment. I had to wait a few minutes, but not too long.

Yes Tom they open on Saturday -they are friendly and helpful - just call in and if they can't take you immediately they will agree a time for you to go back.

I think I went to the same barbershop. I went there in 2014, and received a proper old fashioned shave with a cut throat razor. The chair was of the vibrating kind, so properly fell asleep. Luckily didn't wake up in someone's meat pie.

I agree with you my Viking friend. However, I am married (VERY) and as "the boss" does not tolerate whiskers...well, needs must. When she picks me up at my local airport, I am expected to be clean shaven. Happy wife - happy life...

The problem is that when my beard grows in it comes in snowy white. The resulting look is either Ernest Hemingway, or Papa Smurf (Strumpf), depending on one's perspective. So, I either look older than my years, or just like a comic character...

On balance, I very much enjoy "going commando" for the month or so I am on Camino. But, I also enjoy the result of having the "false years" shaved away on arriving at Santiago.

After having scared the living daylight out of my family 10 years ago by shaving it all off, I have resigned and is leaving it all as it is, but I do agree certain diplomatic solution may have to be adopted for sweet pax familias..

I don't mind having a beard on a Camino but somehow don't feel really good to have it at home......

Who cares if your face is two-tone? After few days in the full daylight, the shades will morph into one. Fashion is secondary. As long as you are not trailing a slime trail, or stink so bad that people avoid you, all is good.

Being on Camino means your mother, wife, or significant other is not following you and nagging you to do things they might have done were you at home...on the other hand, maybe they are.

In that case, disregard this advice and do whatever they say...it is far easier to just say yes, than to bicker, argue and eventually say yes anyway...that is Tom's Rule Number Four (of Five) for a successful long-term relationship., "Just say yes..."

An esthetician acquaintance tells me that it entirely depends on your skin tone, but if it looks at all noticeable, there is a range of foundation and other preparations with which any good make-up specialist can help you. She also gave me a long disquisition (useless as I am bearded) on how most men who shave have no idea how to treat their skin and would be much happier with a bit of expert knowledge on creams, soaps, and after-shave and skin care potions.

Yes. there will be a "tide mark" once you shave if you're exposed to the sun while you have the beard

I always wondered about men´s worries about their looks; I can understand if you are a saleman or important executive person and you need to look like the polished portrait in the entrance hall of the firm. But honestly, Guys, you have just undertaken a trip that involved the hazards of blisters, twisted ankels, upset tommies and endless rainy days, and you worry about skin tones !!
Take it in order of importance! Please..... You have won over an important stretch, and maybe you have conquered your own hidden doubts of whether you could complete your goal. You might as well come back the ragged and weary traveler that you are, with the weatherbitten face, and be proud of that!!
Enjoy the change, enjoy what you have accomplished, blow away the expectations of everyday looks and merely enjoy....
- and then you think about having that shave.....

For me the shave and haircut I had in Santiago was a step back into the reality of an imminent return to my home and work. It was a ritual shedding of the camino and a very relaxing experience.
