Shoes for evening in Mid April-Mid May

Time of past OR future Camino
Plan to start April 23rd (2013)
Hello!

I'd like to thank everyone who contributes to this forum with their experiences and wonderful advice. It has been so so helpful to me while I have been planning my pilgrimage. I think I have everything figured out thanks to this site but there is one thing I'm not entirely sure about..... My question is about footwear in the evening, which has been discussed I see..but I am wondering what shoes do people find the best to wear in the evening for the weather in APRIL/MAY? I am taking thongs (flip flops) for the showers. Will my (fairly) light-weight Nike trainers be worth taking?? Or will thongs be sufficient? Please any comments will be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
Better than zori would be Crocs! You can walk in them in an emergency. A second pair of shoes is usually just extra weight, but the choice is yours. After all, you get to carry them! I have seen one pilgrim walking in flip flops. It made me hurt to watch, but she did it days on end...

Thank you for your response. Yes I'm definitely not a fan of Crocs I'm sorry to say...I like your advice about needing an emergency pair of footwear though. I didn't think of it in that sense. My pack ideally has to be 5.7kg and I've chosen not to take walking poles and have got the lightest clothing and sleeping bag possible, so after I have weighed everything maybe there will be room for my lightweight trainers....hopefully!

I walked in Apr/May 2010, and carried a pair of Teva sandals that I used in the evening, including in the shower. I wasn't tempted to walk in them during the day, although there were many walkers who did walk in sandals when it was dry, even in early Apr.

Regards,

Thanks Doug! So, if was warm enough in the evening for you to wear tevas then? I have been so worried about packing the right clothing/shoes for the weather at that time of year...

If you can bear the fashion faux pas of sandals/ tevas and socks, you'll be onto a winning combination :D
If its warm enough, you can leave off the socks AND you've got an alternative for walking in.
Buen camino !

My Tevas have probably walked about 1500km of the 2800km done to date.

I carry walking boots and wear them only when absolutely necessary.

While walking I always wear socks to prevent chaffing.

Unless it is wet or muddy I wear them at all times. My feet have been cold in the mountains, on the meseta, on the roads, but so what?

The only months my Tevas and I have not been on the Camino is Jan, Feb, July, August.

Socks and tevas look naff but if keeping the feet warm is essential then I can live with it.

In short they are my day, evening and night wear, though I wear flip flops in the showers and to go into the loo at night.

You are on the Camino not the catwalk. :)

I'll second the votes for a pair of Tevas (actually, I prefer Chacos because my feet like their construction better, but they are very similar). You can wear them in the shower and then afterwards with socks if it's cool. Very well suited for the Camino catwalk. I can't imagine walking on the Camino in flip flops, but have seen many walking in Tevas/Chacos, so I think they are worth the extra weight for the flexibility they add. Laurie

Hello all - thank you all so much for all of the guidance on what is not my only first camino but first hike over about 5 miles! I've headed a lot of advice about backpacks and trekking poles and...
