Shops Closed on Sunday in Santiago?

Hi there,

If we walk according to our scheduled plan, we will finish on a Saturday and want to spend an additional day in Santiago - which happens to fall on a Sunday.

Last time we were there someone told us that everything is closed on a Sunday - so we took a tour to Finisterre.

Could someone confirm this?

Thank you!

Hi Mars,

To say "everything" was closed would be a bit of an exaggeration but you certainly shouldn't rely on everything being open. A lot of the tourist orientated small shops will be open as well as most bars and restaurants but places like Decathlon and the covered market aren't. Museums are generally open but for a shorter time than most days.

Was there something in particular you had in mind?

Buen Camino,

Rob.

Hi Dorpie,

Thanks for the reply.

I was thinking the Pilgrim's office...and that nice jewelry shop across the pilgrim's office (I'm not sure if the pilgrim office is still there) - but it had the most beautiful shell jewelry.

Hi Mars,

I know the street you mean though as you suggest the pilgrim office has now moved. I really couldn't say for sure but it's the kind of store that's more likely than some others to be open on a Sunday.

Thanks Rob!

To be safe, we'll make sure to go around on our day of arrival :)

On a side note...where is the new pilgrim's office located? Is it easy to find?

It's just down from the cathedral square on the right. As you come through the arch keep walking straight across the square, down the steps, take the first right turn onto Rua Das Carretas and it's about 50m or so on the left.

As with the previous office queues are a nightmare.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
The Pilgrim Office is open EVERYDAY, except Christmas Day and New Years Day. Usually, the pilgrim oriented souvenir shops across the street on Rua da Carretas are open when the Pilgrim Office is open.

Across Santiago, most everything is closed, except some restaurants and cafes. In the old town, some souvenir shops are open.

However, most services and shopping is closed on Sundays. There is one farmacia open on Sunday that I know of, in the old town.

Hope this helps.

I know some jewellry stores are open as are most souvenir stores. The shop in San Martin Pinario was open on a Sunday when I was there in 2016. It sells clothes, souvenirs, rosaries, books etc

Many stores are open Saturday evening. If you can arrive in time on Saturday, you can do most of your shopping then.
