Signaling in Vigo

President of Xunta de Galicia inaugurated a public albergue in Vigo (the only one).
The mayor didn´t attend the opening.
The Xunta wanted to do the signaling in Vigo but the mayor rejected it and said that he was going to do it but he doesn´t do it.
"It is easier to do the signaling in Picos de Europa than in Vigo" said the President of Xunta.

I know everyone experiences cities differently for different reasons, but I found Vigo to be the least Pilgrim friendly on the CP.

I will be in Vigo tomorrow and booked for 2 days at Hostal real which is close to the new Albergue de peregrinos which doesnt open! I am currently in Baiona now in Albergue Estela do mar , really nice and welcoming..,, and there is a beach just next door where I went swimming upon arrival .. heaven !

This has been going on for years, and it's not just about the Camino. The mayor of Vigo is an 'interesting character'...

Back in May they were talking about placing the Camino signs in bars & restaurants along the route, to avoid the mayor's refusal to have the official Camino markers in town.

They have done this, but I found them to be terribly confusing. And of course nobody informs the pilgrims so it looks a bit more like marketing.

If the bars and business want to help, they should just hang shells and paint arrows on their own buildings.

I find it flabbergasting the extremes: Vigo with precious few arrows, and Astorga with (now) an abundance of them. The middle ground cannot possibly be that hard to find.

I say paint the arrows with or without the Mayor, and let him sort out the politics of how to remove them.

The situation in Vigo is quite ridiculous.
During the lockdown apparently someone painted yellow arrows along the route in Vigo. It was in the news. One morning, the arrows were there.
I have no idea what happened to them, but I wouldn't be surprised if the mayor had them removed. I don't know what he thinks he's achieving with that attitude...

Pilgrims and Camino-related organizations may have many compelling arguments for cities to provide waymarking for the Camino, but we don't get to tell cities or elected officials what to do, and we can't go painting arrows without permission. If the mayor gets all unauthorized "street art" cleaned up with the same ruthless efficiency, I would probably be impressed. (If he only does it for yellow arrows, I would probably be fuming ... but it's his call unless the voters kick him out).

IME, elected officials care most about the views of influential backers and local voters. Perhaps Vigo's mayor will only be persuaded if Camino waymarking improvements become a priority for those constituencies. Money and votes talk. Pilgrims walk.
