Walked the Camino Frances 26th April to June 1st 2013
W ould anyone be able to tell me whether I should take a sleeping bag with me or would a liner suffice. I am walking the Camino next end of April through May I have heard the weather can be unpredictable. I want to go as light as possible, taking a small Osprey Talon rucksack. Do the aubergues provide blankets. Thanks

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum. I have never walked in April but in May you can still have some very cold nights esp. if staying in an unheated albergue. Most albergues do have blankets. My advice would be to take a light sleeping bag, unless you are one of those who do not feel the cold. Even with a sleeping bag I have on the odd occasion gone to bed with all my clothes on.

Is there a good, lightweight, sleeping anyone can recommend (I live in the States),

St James' Way - Self-guided 4-7 day Walking Packages, Reading to Southampton, 110 kms
We each used a snugpak travelpak lite (750gms) in April/May. Comfort level 2-7C, left or right side zip, compression bag. Often available on Amazon. We didn't take liners to save weight but needed the bags.
In 2010 we did not have bags and it was a mistake, even though we were not planning a full length pilgrimage.

Springtime, it all depends on where you stay, in over-crowded albergues say Estella, with the Austrians in Los Arcos, Najera, or the disaster called Os Chacotes it is usually warm enough due to combined body heat. Those who remember Roncesvalles from the good old bad days, the monastary at St Juan de Ortega or Samos can be freezing cold even in the heat of summer. St Juan will even give you a bucketfull of mildew free of charge! Sleeping bags are not heavy don't take much space or can be tied on top or at the side of any backback-always good for something even if just to spread for a picnic.

I walked this year from mid-April to early May and took a lightweight sleeping bag plus a thermal liner. The weather was so cold, windy and rainy that I used them every night. Sometimes I also used an albergue blanket, and once slept in all my clothes as well. I do like to be warm at night but not too warm. Weather is different every year, though, but I'd rather take a bit extra weight to be comfortable at night.

Buen Camino!

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
Hi,

I walked in may June and brought a lite sleeping bag. I think u may have been able to get by with a sheet on most nights maybe just wear a fleece to bed. I really liked the bag I got on amazon the Alps mountaineering Razor summer bag. It is under two pounds and only about $40. Though I would suggest using a compression sack on it, and it gets quite small.

Hi there
We completed the CF in April /May / June of 2009
Carried sleeping bags and liners
Probably actually got inside of bags on 2 occasions. Rest of time used liners on top of bags
We are walking CF again next year in same period and taking same gear except have reduced sleeping bags to 500 grams each ( in 2009 they were 1200grams each)
If interested read about our 2009 walk via Cath's diary on our blog at

Good walk

I don't want to sound pedantic here, but I think it's impossible to give advice on this question. People vary enormously in their sensitivity to hot/cold and their comfort zones. I have been in albergues where people were in their underwear and on top of their sleeping bags, and I was happy to be in a fleece inside my bag. I'm on the cold side, while many others may have better circulation, more natural "insulation," etc. There are lots of other variables, too -- for instance, who wins the battle of the windows and will they be open or closed; how many people are in the albergue, etc.

You probably know by now whether you're the one who always wants to turn the heat up or turn the heat down in the winter, and that will help in your decision. But I, as a "friolera," would never walk a Camino without a sleeping bag, and I usually walk in May-June. I carry the same one as Tia Valeria, a snugpak 750, and though it's often not enough to keep me warm, I don't want to carry a heavier one and I can put on extra clothes and/or hope to find a blanket.

As far as the blankets go, there have been some recent threads on this topic. I think the supply of blankets is decreasing, because of bedbugs in part. But most albergues have something you can use, though I wouldn't count on it.

Hope this helps, and sorry for the longwinded response. Buen camino, Laurie

I walked in June/July of 2012 and carried both a sleeping bag and silk liner. Even I thought it was crazy but I just could not decide which to ditch...and I did not want to be cold. I used both!

Sleeping Bag: http://www.westernmountaineering.co...ping Bags&cat=ExtremeLite Series&ContentId=69
I bought the SummerLite - 1lb 3oz, full length zipper. They make a lighter bag, HighLite - 1lb, but the material was a little noisy and only had a half length zipper.

Silk Liner: http://www.seatosummit.com/products/display/22
I bought the mummy style 100% silk - 4.8oz, very comfortable but may consider the rectangular shape for next time...more foot room.

Most albergues had blankets and several times I thought about sending my sleeping bag home (family in spain so not very costly), but I just could not part with it. Often, I used them together by unzipping the bag and using the liner as a top sheet. I will carry both on my next camino.

You will find what works for you.
Buen camino!
