Sleeping bag or liner in oct

So we have our date set, leaving australia 8 oct 2013 and prob start walking from SJPDP around the 13 oct. From what I have been reading about the weather I am guessing we will be best to take sweepings bags rather than just liners, but what temp would most of you recommend the bag to keep warmth to. I have an alpine sleeping bag which is quite light but is rated to -12' C would this be overkill?

I walked in early spring, and found a +5C bag sufficient, but I was always inside a building, even though it may not always have been heated. With a liner and stuff sack, it was about 1.1 kg.

If you already have a bag that is light, I wouldn't worry about it being overkill and certainly wouldn't bother buying another. You can always leave it unzipped or kick it off.

I agree with Kiwifamily. But I always use a liner with my sleeping bag, mainly to keep it clean. The liner is silk and weighs only 50 gms so doesn't contribute to warmth. When the temp is warm I sleep in that. I had snow at Cebreiro on 26 Oct, but the albergue was heated. From Cebreiro the weather was cold all the way to Santiago, but my -5 degree sleeping bag weighing 600 gms was adequate inside the albergues, which usually were not heated.

My liner is good for about 10 degrees Fahrenheit of warmth, so works great spring, summer, and fall. My soft Tyvek blanket is good for another 10 degrees. I think you will want a sleeping bag in October, but I have settled for the liner and a blanket from the albergue several times in October and November. I do like being cool at night, so if you need to be warm to sleep, keep that in mind, too.
