Time of past OR future Camino
French way (Dic. 2012), Portuguese way (Dic.2013) and now living on the Camino.
Working and living on the "Camino" for some years. I have noticed that sometimes the smokerilgrims (Cigarette), are inclined to break the hostel rules / schedule to satisfy their "NEED" for smoking. As the shelters do not close the door at night for security, they tend to go out at any time to smoke, compromising the security of the shelter and waking up hospitaleros and pilgrims, also sometimes smoke in the bathrooms and almost always throw the butt in front of the hostels. bars and even on the Camino.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Disgusting anti social habit.
They should be flogged. ;);)

I was actually surprised at the number of Spaniards who smoke! It's definitely a small minority in most developed countries these days I think...

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
If you feel security is breeched. Call the police.

oh dear, I suspect this is a contentious topic! As a 'I used to be a smoker' person, I see with compassion those who haven't seen the light! Please, smokers, I will never berate you. I just needed to get to sleep without hearing myself breathe. Those who have never smoked, you are blessed. Another post got me thinking that in this `forum there is generally a wonderful respect and tolerance, and that is why I think it grows from strength to strength.

Hi Arturo,
I'm a smoker( mea culpa) and when on the Camino will often have a "pull" when having a coffee. I very seldom see any ashtrays on the tables and usually get a surprised look from the bartender when I ask for one. In fact the usual response is a "nod" to the pavement!
The locals who step out for a ciggie use the pavement method!!

Certainly though, smoking in the bathrooms or in anyone's house is totally unacceptable ...as is, I think even in an hotel/hostal room....even when smoking is allowed in the room
My butts are stored in my backpack side pocket.....until I find a bin...to the disgust of my poor husband !
Bad bad people these smokers!!
Best wishes
Annette

The factual response to this passive-aggressive thread is that, on average, smokers comply with the law. It is illegal so smoke indoors in bars, restaurants, common areas of hostales, and public buildings. The outside is littered with cigarette butts unless the street sweepers have been around. Bar floors are just generally littered, too, because that is the custom (though counter buckets have appeared in many bars for paper discards). A bartender once explained this to me, "it is easier to sweep the floor occasionally than pick up the bar all day long." Albergue security is not compromised by someone standing by a door having a cigarette. Spain is not THAT dangerous -- leave a door unlocked at night and the bandits will strike??

I thoroughly dislike cigarette smoke, and have to move upwind all the time, but I think it is better to be direct -- I dislike smoke -- than to snipe and snark!! :)

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

I'm a non smoker and dislike cigarette smoke intensely, but I didn't see too many people smoking, and never in the albergue.
I hate going to a outdoors cafe with cigarette smoke wafting over the other diners, but never encountered that much on the Camino until Finisterre - where its likely they were tourists as much as pilgrims.
Overall I found the Camino smokers to be reasonably rare and considerate.
