Thank you so much for posting this. I’ve known personally that walking, especially long distance walking on trails, has helped relieve some symptoms of depression far more than the “endorphin rush” of exercise would explain. I’m glad to see cognitive research is exploring the how and why. I am starting my first Camino in less then 5 weeks and while I feel increasingly stressed about the planning aspects I truly look forward to just being out there on the road, just walking. When I was writing my thesis or other major writing for school I used to bolt out of the library sometimes and pace the whole length of campus and then while I was walking everything would “clarify”... I would be able to sit down and edit what I had into something much more structured and comprehendible. I would tell others to try the same technique but often heard that they didn’t have time to just take a break. Break? No, I do my best thinking when I’m walking!
