Spain: IGN 1:50,000 maps for download!

I've just discovered that the complete set of IGN 1:50,000 maps of Spain are available for download as PDF files (from the datestamps, looks like they set this up last summer). This includes all the old editions as well as the latest, so you can compare and contrast. Not all the sheets have yet been produced in the new digital edition (the one covering Santiago dates from 1944!), but those that have mark both GRs and the Camino Frances from Roncesvalles and the Somport, and are marked with the 1km grid.

I don't find their website very easy to navigate, but the downloads are in the 'cartoteca' section http://www.ign.es/ign/en/IGN/cartoteca_MapTopo.jsp - select the MTN50 option and enter the name/no of the sheet you require. If you don't know which no, there's an overview map at http://www.ign.es/ign/en/IGN/Map_Ima_Co ... _det_1.jsp
For example, you will see that the sheet covering Roncesvalles is #91. Enter '91' under 'Hoja' and you will see there are 3 editions, from 1934, 1950 and the new digital version from 2005. Click on the one you want and you will see 'Tamaño real' (actual size) which is the full A1-sized map. Click on that and it will download it for you.

Warning! These are large files and depending on the capability of your connection/computer, may take a looong time to display, particularly at 100% - they are though perfectly legible at 50%.

You will see that the Roncesvalles sheet is not quite straight, but these are quality maps, so we won't look this particular gift horse too closely in the mouth :)

Update 12.3: the new edns also seem to mark the Fisterra and Muxia routes, plus the Portugues, though quite a bit of the last seems to be along the main road. Does not seem to mark other routes, not even the Via de la Plata.
