St. Lawrence of Brindisi

Time of past OR future Camino
First one in 1977 by train. Many since then by foot. Next one ASAP.
Tomorrow (July 21st) is the Feast of St. Lawrence of Brindisi, OFM Cap, Doctor of the Church, d. 1619, who lies in peace in the chapel of the cloistered Poor Clare's Convento de la Annunciada in Villafranca del Bierzo. I don't think that many pereginos are aware of that....

Some years back, when passing through Villafranca, I decided to pay my respects. I'd heard that the sister's chapel was accessible during divine services. Unfortunately I arrived at an odd hour. I knocked at the convent door and asked to be permitted to visit the chapel. A sister peeked out at me through the grate and brusquely said "Ahora no! En la tarde!" Slam! And, bless her heart, she was right and proper in saying that! It's a cloistered convent, after all!

I'll schedule my visit better next time. Pax, JGE+

Why would they honor the St. Lawrence river? It's OK I guess, but just wondering why. And yes, I do value rivers as they are essential. And that sister violated protocol . . . she never should have opened the door. Chuck

Often rivers, islands, cities, countries were named for the saint whose feast day or other celebration it was when they were discovered.....leaving aside the issue of whether they had ever been lost!

Hence Easter Island, Christmas Island, Ascension Island, Asuncion, Saint Lucia, Sāo Paulo etc etc.

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).
The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
