St. Lorenzo de Sahagun Falling Down

Many, various, and continuing.
It´s hard standing up straight when you´ve been around since the 13th century, and San Lorenzo church, the "jewel of the northern Mudejar" and the pride of Sahagún, is apparently feeling its age.

Pilgrims who´ve been in town over the past two weeks have been kept away from the brick church´s southwest porch by barricades, and two outdoor pillars are now shored-up with hydraulic jacks and lumber. Inside, an archway and roof above the right side of the transept are now down on the sanctuary floor, with daylight visible through a gap in the upper wall. San Lorenzo is a very active parish, and its Masses and activities have been suspended until further notice.

The Junta de Castilla-Leon made an emergency appropriation to pay for shoring up the building and preventing more damage. Money was already slated for restoration work, but the locals are complaining about how incredibly slow things have been getting started. (Familiar cries. Work at La Peregrina, the Franciscan church that´s becoming a Camino Studies Center, is a mere two years behind schedule. And for a year now there´s been money set aside to re-roof the Virgin de la Puente hermitage on the Camino into town, but the Junta´s not even solicited bids yet for the work. Meantime, the Virgin statue´s been moved into San Juan de Sahagun church so the ever-deteriorating roof doesn´t fall down on her!)

I love this country.
