Starting from Faro

Hello Dear Friends,

I'm planning to start my 5th Camino this August and decided it's time to go to wonderful Portugal and walk Camino Portugues this time. I would love to start in Faro, but I can't seem to find any information past 2016. Has the path been marked by now? How many days does in take to get to Lisbon from Faro? Is it easy to get stamps on the way?

I would appreciate any information.

Portugal has a different point of view on the Camino. All the ways there lead to Fatima (marked with blue arrows), although you can find the typical yellow Camino de Santiago arrows as well. Camino in Portugal is well marked between Lisbon and Porto on the central way, there are albergues there now, and from Porto onwards, where the infrastrastructure is excellent. If you decide to go from Faro I think you'll need to find your own way. Travelers do walk there but it's not exactly a Camino, not like VDLP, I'd rather compare it to trekking/hiking and it might be a solitary experience. I also considered going from there this spring but changed my plans. This one from Faro needs some research, preparation and planning. I've also seen info on the way from Tavira in the south, with the approximate stages, it takes 30+days, probably not marked. August will be tought to walk in the south. Keep posting your findings here, would be great to hear about people who did it.

Most follow the Rota Vicentina from the Cabo de Sao Vicente to Santiago do Cacem then make their way to Lisbon and onwards. I walked the Rota Vicentina as others on this forum. You can read about it here https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/forums/rota-vicentina.182/ It is a spectaluar walk but it definately does not have the "feel" of a Camino. I slept in surfers hostels which were great and very reasonable.

I am actually in the Algarve for a holiday after completing the camino del Norte. I was so surprised to find there are official way markers from Faro and also from Tavira! The one in the picture is from the main cathedral in Faro.

Yes, I was surprised by the same thing. This arrow was in Tavira. I even got some info in the church in Tavira, but my impression is that this route is not yet ready for primetime.

I completed Frances to Finesterre last year, and my secondary goal other than cultural/spiritual was to transect the country. With less time, I'd like to attempt Portuguese from Faro. Looking for advise.

So you are saying that starting from Lisbon would be easy and well marked? I was interested in doing the Portuguese too eventually.

I started in Santarem, that is 3 walking days out of Lisbon, it took me 10 days to reach Porto. They are marking the way and opening albergues from Evora, but it will be a totally different kind of Camino, solitary and rural, especially in comparison to the French way: https://caminhosdesantiago.pt/#paths_1.

I walked the Rota Vicentina Fisherman's trail this past April. Very beautiful! Agree with all your observations. I walked opposite of you...north to south, then a long, but easy bus ride up to Porto to start the Camino from there. It actually felt good to just sit for 7 hours! I purchased my bus ticket online quite early and had the very front seat!

Tavira, where they start, is just a short train- or bus-ride east of Faro. The route they are following, through the plains and rolling hills of the Alentejo, is a much-underrated, beautiful, peaceful part of Portugal. The people in the small towns are very friendly and welcoming, in our experience.
