Starting May 17 from Irun... Any seasonal tips/considerations?

After much recent to-ing and fro-ing and wondering what to do, I've finally committed to my plan to walk the Norte this year. Having flirted with starting from Bilbao, I've decided to heed the advice of many others and instead start from Irun, on May 17. I don't expect to make it all the way to Santiago (I have a maximum of 27 walking days at my disposal, flying home on June 13), but I've reached 'the end' in each of the last three summers, so that prospect doesn't feel like a particular hardship.

Anyway, I grappled with those thoughts in a separate, recent thread, so I'll resist the temptation to rehash all of that.

Instead, I'll get to the main point of this thread, namely: Are there any particular things to keep in mind when walking the Norte in May/June? What weather can I expect? How crowded is it likely to be? Are there any specific seasonal factors that apply to walking at that time of year? Any tips in general?

Good for you! You will enjoy beautiful scenary, and cities.

I will not be crowded. Just be careful to pay attention to what albergues are open at that time of the year. Many of them open only in June, others only in July. As for the rest: enjoy the food by having a late Menu del dia.

The coastal areas of Spain and France bear the brunt of any major weather system moving across the Atlantic from North America, that being said the ambient water temperature of the ocean should keep thing in the mild range for you.

Decent rain gear is essential, and make sure you have a warm, dry set of clothes to change into when you arrive at the alberge. You will probably encounter all types of weather in 27 days, prepare for the worst and enjoy the sunshine when it comes. Don't be shy to get on a bus at certain points- walking out of Santander is a long haul especially on a rainy day, as is the walk between Gihjon and Avillies through industrial areas, it is no pleasure trudging through here if the weather is against you. Ask the hospitalero about the route ahead and what are your options for the next day, most are well informed of the next days route and can guide you as to what will make the best day for you. I started walking on May 15th and had a great time, you will too!

There is a lot of asphalt, to help your ankles and knees consider footwear that has a superior shock absorption, think along the lines of running/hiking hybrids.

hello. I am also preparing for the Norte route june 17-july 30. I am wondering about camping outside of the hostels- so i can wake up to the sound of nature and maybe save some euros- is there space for this (camping out) at most of the lodging? thanks
