Staying in an albergue straight after buying a credencial.

Hi all, I'm hoping to start my Camino next Thursday from Pamplona and I would like to know if I would be able to stay at one of the albergues after buying my credencial in Pamplona itself.

Cheers
Patricio

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
I would think so, usually people buy their credentials and then stay the first night in an albergue before they start walking. Regards, Gitti

The hospitalero made a big show of saying that I had not walked into Pamplona, so was not eligible to stay at the Jesus y Maria, but that they had vacancies so I could stay. The vacancy was about 75%! Casa Paderborn is said to be more hospitable. It will be up to a whim, probably.

Why not walk the 4 KM (approx.) to the Roncal Albergue in Cizur Menor and stay there your first night? I didn't stay there, but apparently it has lovely grounds and the Roncal family are very kind. Perhaps other members could comment if they think you would be given a bed at the Roncal Albergue having walked only 4 KM.

It would also give you a little edge the next morning heading up the Alto de Perdon.

Cizur Menor can get full though. A few people I knew had walked out there, and got told to take the bus back into Pamplona to get a bed....

In general, if you haven't walked, you are lower down the priority list than someone who has, so if they are full somewhere, you might strike a problem staying on your first night. I know that a Spanish family group of two adult women and four teens never got to stay inside in the Xunta albergue on top of O'Cebreiro as they had taken a taxi up there for the start of their Camino. They had to wait until after the hour when cyclists were allowed in - quite late- and as the place was then full they slept outside in the end. (The good news was- they all made it to Santiago in the end..same day we did..... and they were sooooo happy with themselves!)

New Original Camino Gear Designed Especially with The Modern Peregrino In Mind!
I arrived about eleven months ago at the Jesus y Maria alberge at about 2200 hrs straight off a bus from Barcelona to start a camino the next day, and the lady Hostpitaler was very helpful indeed. I was with someone else who was also starting there and we had no trouble at all. I think at times people who are not genuine pilgrims sneak into the Jesus y Maria for a cheap night's lodging. I guess if you look like you are a pilgrim, there will not be much trouble. Respects to the person who was challenged though.

a more commercialised monestary hotel spain ...

More-often-than-not, in a monestary hotel spain, your meals will be the same as the monks/nuns.
However, some establishments now employ outside caterers for their guests, making it more commercialised - and often easier to get in.
Here are the addresses of some ...
Hospedería del Monasterio Mercedario de Poio, Apartado de Correos 5, 36080 Pontevedra, Galicia. Tel: 98 677 00 00.

Hospedería de Leyre, 31410 Yesa, Navarra.
Tel: 94 888 41 00.

Hospedería San Juan de la Peña, 22711 Bolaya, San Juan de la Peña, Huesca.

Hospedería Externa Santa Cruz del Valle de los Caídos, 28209 Valle de los Caídos, Madrid. Tel: 91 890 55 11

Hospedería del Real Monasterio de Guadalupe, Plaza de Juan Carlos 1, 10140 Guadalupe, Cáceres, Extremadura. Tel: 92 736 70 00.
