Hola!
I have been travelling on the Camino Frances with a dog. We got as far as Carrion de los Condes when the dog decided she cannot do more so we are staying the night here. Does anyone know how I can best get a ride tomorrow from here with the dog to Leon? She does not have a travel box here so I believe the train and buses are out of the question.
Thanks for your help!

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

I'm sorry to hear this...and hope poor Vacak is better soon. If you are at a pension or albergue, they may be able to help arrange a ride. If you are camping, try asking at the albergue to see if they can help arrange a ride. Good luck

My wife & I went into the wilderness with our 2 weimeraners we went into a terrible area with very sharp granite that cut their paws up. To the point I was concerned we could not stop the bleeding. So I had gauze/0ur extra wool socks/duct tape. I had to cut the socks into tubes with the gauze on the pads of the paw I duct taped the the tube around the paw. After you take a day off try it. The dog will try to chew off but it may get you to where you can find a place to get him fixed up. Once we took a day for them to heal up it got our dogs back 15 miles to the trailhead.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
[Edit: Important! Read the post below by @Rebekah Scott]

There is a dog shelter called "Albergue Sahagún" in Sahagún just about [Edit: 40] km along on the camino from Carrion de los Condes. They may be able to help and they could use some help from you too ($$$ thus their account number at BBVA).

I had some difficulty accessing some of the sites with information on them but Google's snippet about their facebook page had the phone numbers "Contacto 677687772 y 649885934".

[Edit: If nothing else you may be able to board Vacak at Albergue Sahagún while you get a carrier in Leon.]

good luck to you and Vacak.

DON'T take your dog to the pound! The people there do their best, but the place is a dog jail. If I wasn't already babysitting an extra dog I'd tell you to leave Vacak here at Peaceable 'til you finish your walk. (We are already at SIX dogs, and neither of us caretakers is terribly well just now.)
You can get an inexpensive travel box in Carrion de los Condes at the Chino -- it's up top of the hill next door to the Pizzeria Italiano. With one of those you can ride the bus to Leon, catch the bus at the Bar Espana in the morning. (there's a vet next door to Bar Espana, don't know if they have boxes there.)

Thank you Rebekah. I edited my posts above to point to yours.

Noémi, I was not able to definitely find Chino or Pizzeria Italiano but Bar Espana is located here: https://mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4.php?ll=42.337132,-4.600772&z=18&t=m

Wow! Thank you so much for all the replies! The good thing is that we don't need a vet. We just need rest. I have indeed thought about getting a baby carrier but I have no idea where I could get one from. She is 15 kgs, so it would be a challenge but definitely some solution. If not I will look for a carrier.
Thanks again!!

I see people carrying children in hiking strollers. Maybe go to a sports store and buy one for the pup?

your dog won't be eligible for a credential if it doesn't walk the last 100km.
Haha. She has a Credential anyway. We will see if we can walk the last 100 kms. :) I managed to get a ride to Leon and once there I will figure out what to do. I just realised that I put inmy original post that I am travelling with 'a dog'.. It is MY dog :) And she had done really well!
I will keep you updated on what we decide.

Just to share info regarding travelling with a dog on a bus or train. From my experience buses will not allow dogs on the bus with the passengers but rather force you to put it in with the luggage which is fine for a short ride but in the heat and for a long trip no way! I ended up paying for a taxi from Finisterre to Santiago as there was no other way to get back to Santiago with mine. Luckily Renfe does allow dogs and only at €5 euros a good deal. Mine is only 5 kilos go I just carry him in a bag when travelling.

@vacakos noemi I would love to hear where you slept. Did you take a tent?

Good luck and Buen Camino.

I have seen many dogs on the Camino over the years. Some had walked it before, one was doing it for the 7th or 8th time, the whole Frances, both ways. So it can be done, but it delends on the dog, and how one cares for it.

At the Pilgrim's Office a woman was queuing with her Greyhoud, and talking about how it collapsed en route and almost died. Was I surprised? It's a Greyhound, built for short bursts, very short bursts of energy. It is not meant for continuous excercise.

Please, when taking a dog on the Camino, take into account what it was bred to do. A Pekinguese was bred to be lap dog; it belongs on your lap, for an extreme example. The Greyhound is another. Also consider what the individual has shown you it can do in terms of activity. And yes, bring its first aid kit as well, starting with walking boot to protect its pads at all times. Bring poop bags as well!!!! Not that you were not bringing any cor yourselves ;0)

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

Hi Noemi -
It would be great to see a photo of Vacak ... would you mind posting a photo of her? I bet she's absolutely beautiful!
Cheers and Buen Camino to you both -
Jenny

Hi Noemi -
Thanks so much for the link to your wordpress site and the photos of Vacak. What a darling girl she is! She's absolutely beautiful! What a companion she must be for you and what a wonderful thing it is that you've been able to share those ancient and magical paths of the Camino together. I hope that after a rest in Leon that you're able to continue to Santiago.
Buen Camino Noemi and Vacak -
Cheers - Jenny
