Symbols in church art (Iconography - I think)

I walked the French way last year and the Portugese recently and have become more interested in the meaning behind the art, be it sculpture, paintings or glass. Can anyone recommend a good book or website that explains the meanings of the various symbols. Thanks in advance.

Scan either the paperback or ebook version available on Amazon of [/I]: The Complete Cultural Handbook by David M. Gitlitz and Linda Kay Davidson. It is a useful introduction to art and architectural history along the camino.
