Dear all,

As some of you may have seen, I have added the most used tags on the forum to the front page:
https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/

What are tags?
Up until now we have added a question we had related to the Camino Frances, in the Camino Frances section of the forum. We have organized the questions that way, in categories. This is great and we will continue to do it this way. But tags gives us an extra opportunity to organize threads across these categories.

For example: Let's say you have question on boots and are planning to walk the Camino Portuguese. Maybe you would ask your question in the Camino Portuguese section of the forum. That is fine, but the question might only be read by people reading this section of the forum. By adding a "boots" tag to your thread, it might be discovered by more people, also pilgrims planning to walk other Camino's.

Have a look what the current "Boots" tag loo like here:
https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/tags/boots/
...you will see that it contains all you need to know on this topic, and the threads you see are from all over the forum (from various categories)

How do I tag a thread?
Screen Shot 2015-11-21 at 10.36.14.png

When you create a new thread, you can ad tags to this thread just above the "Create Thread" button at the bottom. Separate tags by comma if you have more than one tag.

Please note that tags can also be applied to "Camino Resources" and "Photos" in the photo section.

Once the tags have been created, they look like this:

https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/threads/boots-shoes-or-sandals-on-the-primitivo.36776/

...do you see them under the thread title? This thread has been tagged with the following tags: "Boots", "primitivo" and "shoes". Clicking on any of these tags will tke you to all the content that has been tagged with this tag.

Tags are just another way of organizing content.

I hope this explanation helps a little bit... :)

Greetings from Santiago!
Ivar

Just to add to Ivar's comments, you can quickly determine the most popular topics and search specific topics via the tag cloud.

The tag cloud ( see attached below ) shows the most popular tags or topics that are trending now. The larger and more bold the text, the more popular the topic. By clicking on the actual text, you will be shown all threads and posts that have been tagged with this tag ( topic ). In the example below, Backpack is the most popular topic, followed by footwear, followed by blisters, pack list, etc.

Just one question: Occasionally, when trying to attach a tag, I got an error message along the lines of 'you are not allowed to create a new tag'. Is this still in place? Thanks, SY

I just had a look and you should be able to create new tags. Let me know if this is still a problem..

@SYates you can only tag when you create a new thread. Is it happening then?

@ivar and @Kanga it used to be a problem when I created a new thread. The next time I do so, I will check it out again ;-) SY

Not a bad idea...Or maybe a tutorial about features and small mysteries? (Eg, Stupid question: what are the little green tabs on some avatars and not others?)

The green tab shows when that particular person is logged in. When they log off the green tab disappears.

Thanks Ivar, we added "LIVE from Camino" to my content. Now we are flying home, how do I remove the "LIVE ...." tag from the post?

Most years since 2012. Hoping now for 2022.
This thread is 6 years old, and there have been changes to the way tags are used. We'll give an update in a new thread.

In the meantime, to answer @Airfix 's question, there is no need to remove the "prefix" "LIVE from the Camino". It was written as LIVE and can stay that way to indicate its special nature.
