Tent space only at Orisson

Hi forum friends,i really wanted to stay at Orisson the 6 sep but i recieved an e mail offering me a tent for 2 persons at 23 euro including dinner and breakfast this is all thats available at that time .I am now wondering if i should just stop there for lunch and continue on into spain.Is the climb that hard for someone with little training or could i make it all the way on my first day ,?very nervous pilgrim,lillian :?

Whatever you decide, to stay or not the tents are behind the main building with the bathrooms, showers and restaurant. The pilgrims I know stayed in the tents were happy about it (I stayed in a mixed room for 6 persons with two of them snoring all night). I think there were mattresses in the tents and it was not that uncomfortable. This was the 16th of May this year.

So the tents might be an option and you don´t have to walk all the way from SJPP to Roncesvalles in one day (of course another option).

Bear in mind that if you do stay in a tent it is VERY cold up at that height. I saw some folks at breakfast who spent the night freezing. A warm sleeping bag will be required.

Hi Lillian,
The tents might be fun, but if the weather is ok you can make it in one day, just start a little earlier to give yourself time and enjoy the break at Orisson.
I lassie I know who began her solo Camino with hardly any notice and therefore little training (and who was also a bit apprehensive about the Route Napoleon) set off last Wednesday at 8am and was in Roncevalles in 8 hours. Having got to Pamplona on Friday back to Ireland on Saturday...... she is now thinking of doing another section later in Sept!

I stayed at Orisson way back in September 2007, and i chose to get a tent. It was my first night on the Camino and did not feel like hearing other people snoring!! I was lucky that the other girl i travelled with did not snore!! You also get a nice comfortable matress in the tent however one needs a warm sleeping bag - i guess that a silk sleeping bag is not enough up there!!

However, i still think that Orisson is one of the best places to stay, fantastic dinner and a fantastic breakfast to start your day with!!

We'll see you at Orisson on the 6th. We booked some time ago and have beds but I think the tent would be lovely.
We fly (from Gladstone, Queensland, Australia) tomorrow and are staying at L'Espirit on Sat. night.

Hi Artemis! Remember me? :lol: Anyway, don´t think you met her but the red-headed young lady who wandered in L´esprit with 2 other women yesterday morning as I left is also a forum member, Christina! She stayed at Orisson with me last night, in one of the tents. She said they had a mattress & a blanket to go with their sleeping bags & she enjoyed it, even with the storm last night. We both made it over the mountain today & are now safe & sound at Roncesvalles.

So, y´all don´t sweat the tents!

BTW, don´t be shy about asking for a cab to or from Orisson. I took one myself from Hunto & then onwards today 8 km up the road from Orisson, where the taxi dropped us off where the camino & road split off. Still quite the work out! :shock:

How do you get the taxi from Orisson ? Do you just phone from there ?

I asked Jean-Jacques in the morning. Apparently, I´m not the first person with the bright idea of taking a cab 8k up the mountain. I´m beginning to think you can get cabs to do anything, except cartwheels.

My husband and I were offered a tent for the first night at Orisson on the 19th May 2009 & then when arrived we were offered a bunk in the main house. We decided to take the option of the tent which was very warm as we had a sleeping bag & they also gave us blankets. We had a great night with no snoring but all night the people going to the toilet all you heard were the zipping & unzipping of the tents. A comfortable night however as had no intention of going all the way to Roncesvalles in one day.
