Tenting in Spain

Im doing the camino in late May 2005. I wonder about the possibility of tenting along the route. Can I tent anywhere, or do I have to use official camping sites? Prices, recomandations etc? What about the weather in May - June, is it ok for tenting?

Hei Bjørn,

I have heard of a few pilgrims with tents, but most of them leave the tent at home. I think there are a few reasons for this.

1) There are not too many campgrounds. I don't think you can camp anywhere you want.

2) The refuges are pretty cheap and this is also a good place to meet other pilgrims and socialize.

Regarding the weather in May/June, please see statistics here (for Galica).

Bjorn -

I am doing the Camino Frances in 3 weeks and am planning on camping whenever weather permits. I just received the Confraternity of St. James guide to the Camino Frances for 2005 and they note where camping is available/permitted, prices to camp, tent rental prices, class rating, phone numbers (if any) and even directions off and back onto the Camino. Although I haven't made the journey yet, this seems to be a most reliable and up to date source.

Thank you for your good advices! I really would like to bring a small tent (one-man tent) so that I can rest or sleep whenever I want to. But I will have to think of the wheight of the baggage as well. The weather-site from Peter Robins is great, thanks! It seems that the clima suites tenting for some periods.

Thanks again for your responds.

tenting 2005

I too am looking to tent this summer. It will be my first trip and my boyfriend will be walking with me as well. It is his first time too. We were hoping to camp as much as possible, any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Suzanne!
I`ve spoken to a friend of mine who did the carmino in 2002. He said tenting was very good, as he could tent almost everywhere in Spain, and he could stop for the night whenever he wanted to. So I`ve decided to bring a tent, and hope to do a pleasant carmino where I combine tenting with hostels along the journey to Santiago.
I`m starting the carmino from St. Jean Pied Du Port on the 23 of May 2005, and hope to reach Santiago in the beginning of July. Maybe we`ll meet somewhere along the carmino? Who knows...

Tenting on the Camino

Turespana has issued a guide called: Guia oficial de Hoteles Y Campings del Camino de Santiago: It is available for free at any tourist office or from Madrid - email: manuel.jurado@tourspain.es Many of the camping sites only open in Spanish summer i.e. after June or July.
Buen Camino.

Tenting

I`m doing the Carmio soon (St.Jean Pied Du Port to Santiago), and I`ve decided to bring a small tent. If there is anyone who can give me an advice on where to camp/ campsites along the route, I would be most thankfull!

Several new pilgrims have asked about tents. This topic has some good information.
