Strung out across the hills and valleys between the Drakensberg Mountains and the Indian Ocean, like the knots on a string of Rosary beads. are twenty-two historic Trappist missions.

Established over a century ago by a group of dedicated Trappist monks led by Abbot Francis Pfanner from Austria, the Monastery of Mariannhill grew to be the largest Trappist monastery in the world. Her outreach Mission churches are hidden treasures that we want to share with the world. The trail will extend for ± 250 km through stunning countryside, rolling hills and green valleys, farms, grasslands and forests.

Thomas Merton spoke about the missionary work of Mariannhill in these terms:

"Here was the astonishing spectacle of a Trappist mission in which the contemplative monks had achieved in few short years, a success more spectacular than many an active order had dared dream of. The most astounding thing about this new mission was that it was operating on purely Benedictine lines. It was an apostolate of prayer and labour (ORA ET LABORA), of liturgy and the plough. What was taking place in the outposts established by Dom Francis Pfanner was exactly the same process that had marked the Christianization of Germany and all northern Europe by the Benedictine monks hundreds of year before."

You can read more about this stunning new pilgrimage trail here and watch a fascinating video about Abbot Pfanner and his missions, one of the most extraordinary missionary adventures in the Catholic church which ultimately lead to his suspension and exile and separation from the 1500 year Trappist order.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
This is fascinating. I've never associated Trappist monks with South Africa, but maybe that just shows how little I know about either. I watched the first few minutes of the video and am looking forward to the rest. History, scenery, culture, faith.... looks like this camino combines them all.
