Tere – Labrīt – Labą dieną – Hello !
The Baltic republics : Tallinn via Vilnius to Krasnapole (21 July – 9 Oct, 2017 )
…one fine day in the heat of summer, 2017 I set off to explore Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania…
A few days before arriving in Tallinn I was invited by members of Eesti Jaakobitee polverändurid to join in their celebrations of Jaakob (21-28 July, 2017). For a week or so we hiked together along dusty roads, from church to church, by swamps and feilds and forests until one day we arrived in Pärnu-Jaagupi…
After Pärnu-Jaagupi I walked alone without gps, phone or camera relying on chance meetings, information gleaned from locals and maps discovered along the way. I did not carry a tent or sleeping gear.
I had a notion to swim in the Baltic Sea and walk the Latvian coastline as far as Riga ; to visit Kryzių Kalnas (Hill of Crosses) in Lithuania then walk on via a few Šv Jokūba churches and synagogues to Vilnius.
In Latvia someone suggested I visit Tervete Regional Park, a place of national significance close to the Latvian/Lithuania frontier. So, I crossed into Lithaunia at Žagarės. Kryzių Kalnas (Hill of Crosses) was not far from there…
From Žagarės I plotted my trail using a book of road maps aquired in Riga, a sketch indicating Šv Jokūba churches in Lithuania, and a picture of pilgrimage trails linking Siaulia and Kaunus, Vilnius and Alytus. I walked from village to village, reasoning that if a church was indicated on a map I might find basic services near by.
The journey was intense. It was rich in kindness and loving care. Thanks to all who sheltered and guided me along the way.
I have posted a resource, here, which includes maps + route finding ; a comment on the trail ; stages walked with Google Map links ; accommodation, shelter and assistance. (Log in for access)
