Yesterday I only saw 4 pilgrims in 26 kms from Ventosa. Most albergues and cafes are still closed with those open desperate for pilgrims.
I know many still cannot travel to Spain but it is possible from most of Europe and even from the UK where I came from it is possible.
So come on especially you oldies like myself, there are only a very few here, it is time to come out from behind the sofa and live again, they are waiting in Spain.!

I can come whenever and struggling to decide when, Will be my first camino, I am double vaccinated from the UK. I am not sure whether to wait until next Spring or to come ASAP and risk being sent home if the delta variant gets worse. Reading these forums it seems a lot of people have booked for September time. I really wanted to have a camino experience involving communal meals and lots of socialising, there were some albergues I really want to stay at that are closed still due to bed capacity restrictions 😔

With extreme sadness, i cancelled my plans for this year.
As of now, travelers returning from Portugal have to enter a 14 day quarantine in Germany. Vaccination and tests have no influence on the number of days.
Unfortunately i belive, spain will soon follow this ruling, since the Delte mutation is on the up there aswell (like everywhere in europe, including germany)

Sadly, i can't risk the 14 days of quarantine at this moment. So this is going to be another year of no camino for me. Which sucks, honestly. It is most likely worse for the people over in Spain and Portugal, that where hoping on this years revenue. Or might get sick from this spreading mutation.

Sorry for my language, but this virus is frustrating the heck out of me.

The Camino needs you? The Camino doesn’t need you. The Camino is a simple, holy, road- a thousand wandering paths all with one destination. The businesses that line those paths might need your €’s. The Albergues, the bars, the hostels and the Tourismos might welcome your presence but the Camino? The Camino, the Journey , the Way, the Road- it doesn’t give a monkey’s about you. The pilgrimage is: the rest is just stuff.

I'm coming! 🦸‍♂️
I'll arrive in Pamplona tomorrow with an eye towards starting in SJPDP or Roncesvalles on Friday. Ron, did you start in SJPDP? Any difficulty with the border crossing?
There is no border just a cattle grid.

Well said. You are absolutely correct, @Tincatinker : The Camino will always be there. It is timeless, not caring about (our) temporary difficulties that will pass. It is majestic.

An interesting idea. If pilgrims were to suddenly stop walking tomorrow and not resume walking would the Camino still be there? The routes would still be there, the many paths pilgrims have walked for centuries up until this time. But do the routes and paths themselves make a Camino? Or is it the combination of path and pilgrim following it that makes a pilgrimage and a Camino? I think there is no pilgrimage without pilgrims, and no pilgrimage means no Camino.

Just wondering if your reply was purposefully pedantic and/or grouchy...

It's fairly easy to tell what the OP meant in his post.

The Camino has existed for 1.200 years. It is a road to Santiago. Without any pilgrims, it will still be there. Laying still, waiting for us.

We have had the Black Death, wars, religious differences, various pandemics, and more, during the centuries, and some trouble the last 1.5 years, getting there and walk it. Many of us will now be returning, vaccinated and pretty safe.

But the Camino doesn't care about all that: It is there for us all, all the time, waiting for us to come and walk it, as it has always done, and always will. Time is on the side of the Camino.

All will be well, in due time.

likely to be more rule changes due to the current surge unfortunately. I am hoping by October with 70-80% fully protected then things may be more stable.

Claire, your post pretty much echoes my thoughts at present. The Camino seems to get further away for me with new variants, increasing cases etc not withstanding the fact I have had both vaccinations.I personally am not prepared to travel unless the situation becomes a lot clearer and the risk of a something even more serious occuring whilst on the Camino is possible.
For those who wish to travel in these difficult times, you have my best wishes but I keep reminding myself that it will always be there and when the time is right for me,I will still get the opportunity to enjoy the same sort of experience you describe, hopefully without closures, social distancing, changing travel plans etc.

Reduction of capacity in hostels

During the health crisis, the hostels on the Camino de Santiago can modify their offer of places to adapt to the different regulations, vary their opening date or even remain closed. Ireland still does not have ready our EU Covid Digital Certs. Our public health advice continues to be non essential travel and we expect this to be removed July 19. Given the heat on the CF, this Irish pale skinned gal needs to wait until Sept to walk but coming I am to walk my first Camino in Spain.

Booked flights from Heathrow to Madrid today. Arriving Burgos on 20th July to resume a Camino interrupted in 2020. Both of us are fully vaccinated and looking forward to three or four weeks of peace and tranquillity.

Arriving in Santiago on Saturday after a fortnight’s walk. I couldn’t agree more that the Camino needs us. Far too many closed restaurants, cafes, hostels and hotels. I’ve spoken to people who are losing businesses that have been years in the making and are now threatened with the pain of closure. The friendliness shown to me has been overwhelming. Someone further up this thread makes the good point that the route will always be here and that is very true. For me though, the Camino spirit is found in the hearts of fellow pilgrims and those that have chosen to serve on the path.

This Camino is well worth a few pointless days in quarantine when I get back to Blighty.

The bus driver announced on are bus that she was required to tell us the a PCR test is required to enter France. About half the people got off the bus. I didn’t got to SJPP went to the Pilgrim’s Office, got my credential, went to the Albergue, next day went to Orrison which is still in France, following Day walked to Roncevalles. Did not have any problem.

I will be there September 16th in Madrid, where I will take a train to Pamplona. My second Camino. The first one started in Sarria three years ago. I will move up to SJPdP on my third Camino, or maybe drop down and do Portugal.

I can't wait. Jose, who hosts the Camino People podcast, suggested I track him down in Pamplona and he will show me around, so I am hoping I can arrange that. Meanwhile, I have been backpacking up in the Blue Ridge Mountains to get in shape.

At first glance reading this I was like "how dare you sir!", then realized perhaps you're right. ;) The Camino sits there like it always has, just minding its own business. However I still believe that the Camino isn't 100% impartial. It will beckon you, make no mistake.

Lucky you.
We are lockdown in Australia and not permitted to travel overseas unless there are exceptional circumstances. The sticking point is that the hotels in which inbound travellers have to quarantine for two weeks are FULL..
I doubt the Australian government would view me finishing the VDLP as "exceptional circumstances"

Nice distinction. Neither the routes or the means of transport define the pilgrimage. They are merely a reflection of history testifying to the longevity of “La peregrinación a Santiago”.
It is the pilgrims, the hospitaleros and the albergues who, in their intent and motivation, create the pilgrimage. The bars, cafes etc are pleasant additions but not defining factors.
On the other hand they do add immensely to the experience and at this time are undoubtedly hard pressed.

I'm a fellow pale skinned Irish female, and will be starting my first Camino on 1st September.
I lost my job yesterday, and would love to go immediately, but need to wait as there is no way my skin will be able to handle the heat.
On the plus side, having no job means I can spend the next 2 months getting plenty of training in, so I'm grateful for that.

Although, I believe the first half of September will be fairly hot also. It will be factor 30 suncream for me all the way I'd say lol

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
I am also a fair freckled Breton skinned female .. I am using 50+ all the coastal way ( the sun was hot nd thèses breeze was coo( the most treacherous combination!!... No sunburn at all .. you need to In vest in good quality .. very important
Buen Camino!!

Hi Meazara. Yes I am, planning to go all the way from SJPdP to Finisterre, so we will surely meet.
I am flying Dublin to Biarritz on 31st Aug, ready to start walking the following day.

A friend finished the Camino Aragones on Friday night at Obanos and yesterday he backtracked on the Frances to Trinidad de Arre. He passed around 50 pilgrims in total going westward, I'm going to make a guess here that 6 or 7 days earlier there would have been greater numbers going westward as they aim to reach Santiago for the 24/25 July.

Aiming to start from Pamplona on August 31 or Sept 1 as far as Burgos in two weeks. Private rooms only - too much of a princess! Im doing the whole route in sections but aiming for a full set in 2022. Will take plenty of sunscreen for another fair skinned Celtic body.

Limin Time (Caribean slang for “chill”),
I started in St Jean pied de Port last month and have taken a leisurely walk on the Camino France, my fourth Camino France walk. I’m currently in Sarria and will be walking to Portomarin tomorrow morning. Yes, there’s been fewer pilgrims walking then in the past years, and fewer restaurants, and albergues to stay in. I found the walk doable and had no need to make a long list of reservations in advance, this allowed me the freedom “to walk my walk.” Now that I’m in Sarria, it’s like the old days where there’s more pilgrims and vacationers walking to Santiago, reservations are required moving forward. I have found it’s harder to get the accommodations I have used in the past.
I have been told by friends in Pamplona the number of pilgrims are increasing daily.
Bon Camino
