"Along country lanes, past vineyards, olive groves and pine forests, up a steep, hot rocky track and onto a cobblestoned road to the high point of Alto de Santa Clara. A very welcome cold beer at a hilltop bar, its owner insisting on stamping our pilgrim credential with her own inked fingerprint. Then, downhill, with a skip in our step, past the Roman aqueduct, a section of which has been sacrilegiously sliced out to make way for a freeway. On towards ancient Coimbra, once a Roman town and the capital of Portugal, now a university city and world heritage site."

It is not correct what you say. The medieval aqueduct was not destroyed to build the road. It is a mistake that many pilgrims make.
The aqueduct was destroyed by the French in the invasion of Portugal by Napoleon's troops.
I hope that this situation will be clarified once and for all, at least for those who read this article.
