This new museum of the Camino that starts with Aragon will grow in the next two years to house the selected works of all the autonomous communities of the Camino. There are 360-degree views of monuments such as the interior of the Vatican's Sistine Chapel, or virtual tours such as that of the Louvre Museum facilities as Google Street View, but what no museum or art gallery has yet ventured to create, is a 3D Virtual Museum to expose and tour collections of art and heritage scattered throughout the territory.
That is exactly what the Provincial Council of Huesca and the Association of Municipalities of the Camino de Santiago presented on Tuesday, the design of a 3D building / museum created expressly to bring together a selection of the most important works of the Camino de Santiago through Aragón. 90 km of art available to all heritage lovers on their mobile devices, computers or virtual reality glasses, the latter for a truly immersive experience.
The Association of Municipalities of the Camino de Santiago "has turned the difficulties arising from the current health crisis into an opportunity, turning the Alto Aragonese part of the French route into a pioneer of an initiative that will value not only this section but the rest of the Santiago's road". These are the words of Roque Vicente, president of the Information Commission for Development and Sustainability of the Provincial Council of Huesca, in the presentation of the Virtual Museum.
This Museum begins with a selection of 26 architectural, pictorial and sculptural pieces of the highest value of the Camino de Santiago through Aragon that are distributed between a museum and the temples of the 23 Aragonese towns.
As the president of the AMCS, Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza, pointed out, "a fundamental aspect of the Camino - which makes it unique and makes it something different from other natural routes - is its history and heritage."
“Much of this heritage,” Mendoza continued, “is 'hidden' in small churches and monuments that are difficult to access due to timetables and the ability to have people to attend to it. As a consequence of this, there are places on the Camino that the visitor can know without problems, and on the other hand, other times they are rarely visited. Among those goods, which are difficult to access for their knowledge, the altarpieces of the churches of the small towns of the Camino stand out and, on occasions, other elements guarded in these monuments. These works, of great value, scattered and hidden, are the object of the Virtual Museum "
From the beginning of major, this resource will be available to the public who will be able to contemplate, for example, the main altarpiece of the 16th century on Tuesday, the Romanesque baptismal font of Urries from the 13th century, the coffered ceiling of Mianos, the choir stalls of Berdún or the 14th century wall paintings from Abay. The AMCS has thanked the Bishopric of Jaca for their collaboration in the project.
The presentation was attended by the mayor of Canfranc, a town that is part of the association of municipalities on the Camino de Santiago. Fernando Sánchez has valued the fact that Alto Aragón has been chosen as “testing ground, the number of pilgrims had already decreased long before the pandemic and there is still a certain fear of starting such a long march, so this This initiative can serve as a catalyst for a path that, let us remember, is a World Heritage Site also generates economic movement and wealth in our territory ”.
He also pointed out that through this virtual museum “society in general will be able to know part of the rich historical and artistic heritage of our municipalities, but it can even serve so that those who are fond of pilgrimage decide on the French way in the moment that they decide to resume their hobby or that people who are prevented from traveling the Camino, get to know their heritage through this initiative.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
That looks like a very interesting project! It would be fascinating for us to be able to combine a virtual camino with the virtual museum - walk our 20 km at home, follow it on a map, and then visit the "local" Camino sights in the museum in the evenings.

Regarding the uniqueness, the article provides a little more explanation...

The headline came from this article, which is informative, but the headline writer did the normal trick of leaving out some context - the text said this museum would be "el primero del mundo de estas características" - i.e. the first in the world of its type.
