I just felt compelled to dig up some writings from my first Camino Frances in 2005 as a predominantly solo walker. I think it captures very well what the Way meant for me, and brought the change in me I so much sought. nothing to do with shoes, packs or planning, but everything with the state of my heart. I decided to share as I feel it may inspire some to reflect on the meaning of their own journeys.

The Journey

The distance is daunting and yet they dared
To embark upon an ancient path of faith
To leave behind a world that does not spare
The time for suffering souls to become free
Souls that must seek solace with their maker
And claim a space in which to simply be

So do they mind the blistering burning feet?
Do they moan about hunger or lack of sleep?
Or do they curse the relentless meseta heat?
The mountains are testing and yet they pursue
This strenuous road that marks the pilgrim's course
For it heals spirits weary and hearts confused

MIllions before have left here their history behind
Along with their old clothes that they have burnt
To themselves they became lost in order to find
The path draws us further and further along
And as packs become lighter, hearts become filled
In silence we uncover the holy Camino's song

'What is your query?' The path murmurs and whispers
'Proclaim your question, pilgrim, so you may receive
The end of suffering is assured to good listeners'
'May,' my mind rejoins, 'Your will, not mine, be done'
'May, my heart responds, 'I be a vehicle for your love'
'May, my step retorts, 'my heart and I become One'
