It was wonderful to see the plaza and Cathedral looking their best. Thank you. And the King's speech was very moving. I have a question. When the King was inspecting the Honour Guard he was carrying a wooden staff or stick with a silver top, and he still carried it as he entered the cathedral to meet the Archbishop; as he was obviously not using it to walk, what was it? Is there any symbolism to his carrying this particular item? Just wondering because I inherited a similar stick from my father 30 years ago and it had been in a stand in the front hall of our house for long before that - perhaps another 30 years at least!

Other forum members will be more familiar with military ranks and their symbols so I will leave it to them and not even try to attempt to explain the Spanish ones in English ☺️. In Spain, the staff is called bengala del rey or bengala de capitán general, and here is one of many articles about it:

Your comment made me curious and I went and listened to it and then I also found the text of his speech here: https://www.casareal.es/ES/Actividades/Paginas/actividades_discursos_detalle.aspx?data=6436

I was surprised to hear that he made several references to Europe and the European project (unity of Europe) and I groaned when he quoted the fictive words attributed to Goethe 😇. And it seems to me that he spoke a few sentences in Galician if I’m not mistaken?
