    Dear all,

I am considering discontinuing the Camino forum app (the one that can be downloaded for iOS and Android, links at the bottom of this page). There are a few reasons:
    • The forum is now optimized for mobile devices and you can visit it in the browser.
    • The App does not include the new sections we have created in the forum like the Calendar, the Camino Resource Section and the Photo album. This leads to confusion among users, since the App users can not see everything that is available on the website. Also links to the "User Settings" that are posted in the forum, will not work in the app since the settings there are accessed in a different way.
    • The app cost me money each month, and although I do have ads on it, it does not cover the cost of the app.
I have pretty much made my mind up, but I wanted to hear from users that are currently using the app... would you be ok with going back to using the website http://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/ in your mobile webbrowser instead of the app?

    Thanks for your feedback!
    Ivar

Ivar, I use the app, just because it's convenient should my IPhone "bleep" and I can check quickly when on the run. That said, I'm not in the business of doing something that's counter intuitive.

    Zap the App!

    Saludos,

    Arn

    Ivar,

Of course you know best but might this result in the Forum's loss of potential revenue from users attracted by the availability of an App? Seeing such listed in Google Play and/or Iphone App Store might attract further users and their needed donations.

When first reading the title of your thread my heart skipped a beat as I erroneously thought you meant discontinuing the Forum itself !! What a catastrophe that would be!!
Thank you once again for all that you have done and continue to do to keep this extraordinary digital meeting place a going concern.

Ivar, I always go to the forum first not the app on my iPhone or iPad.

Up to you - regardless thank you for all your efforts.

Your call of course but I use the app 80% of the time...20% on my laptop.
I have subscribed to / watched a host of threads and it's great getting a notification knowing that there is a reply or further information.
That said, I also receive an email so the removal of the notification / beep is not a biggie.

Using the forum through my browser wouldn't be an issue at all.

Hi Ivar, - Thanks for consulting on this. I only use the app for iPhone and do not access the forum via PC I guess I am heavily invested in the app functionality

For this post I have gone to the browser and I am using it and it is fine - my only concern is that to access the forum currently I just tap the app - I guess I must bookmark the site to make launching it easier via the phone browser? Not a big issue.

There is no point retaining the app if it can't make a contribution to running costs - it might be interesting to look at what the app charge would have to be to make it as attractive as the web site ?

Many thanks for all your work and making this resource available

Ivar - hope I'm allowed a supplementary reply - I'm fairly sure the app was downloaded for free - I would be happy to pay for the app,

and if this grey haired wrinkly prefers his news/TV catch-up / twitter/ email all via a mobile device - it might be there is a bigger audience for an app now and increasingly in he future - it just might be worth looking again at how you might get a contribution from it rather than abandoning it altogether ??

Ivar, both solutions work to satisfaction on my iPod and iPad (and PC of course), in which case skipping one is quite OK. We'll still keep the yearly donation going!;)

With no smart phone we don't have any apps, but it would be a shame if the cost of maintaining the app was a drain on the Forum itself. So long as folk with smart phones can all access a browser - Can they? I am totally ignorant on this?

I use the app but could easily use the forum, especially if staying logged in is an option. With the app I don't have to log in daily.

Since the app has been free, I feel better about discontinuing it. If I make it paid, and I don't get the volume to sustain it, the few that paid for it would not be happy if what they paid for then later gets discontinued... Making it paid complicates things.

I also feel that user experience in the future will be better using the website rather than this app...

    Thanks for all your feedback.

Ivar, just thought I should add the following.
On my desktop I, of course, use the main forum.
Whilst I have the app on both my iPhone and iPad I, 99% of the time, use on both the main site to access the forum.
I love that the main site is accessible for free to anybody, meaning both past and possible future peregrinos.
And I personally, as a "donating" member, am more than happy to continue to help it maintain that free status.
However my suggestion is that maybe to have the app on your phone or tablet you should have to pay either a one-off payment or an annual subscription so as to make it economically viable?
    sorry

Ivar, I use the browser 90% of the time so can easily do without the app.
Your time and expertise is more than enough contribution, that you should be having to use your own funds to keep the app available is not a situation that should be allowed. If it is not possible to cover costs by the advertisements ( or by charging for the app as suggested elsewhere ) then I feel you should discontinue the app.

With thanks and appreciation for all the help and encouragement your efforts have been able to provide the many thousands of members of this forum.

Ivar, I appreciate and applaud everything you do for us and the app was another great idea. However it didn't work for me - I actually prefer the website to the app on my Android. I still get all my notifications and all the content. I have downloaded it twice because people said great things about it, but then deleted it ... Sorry :( It's up to you of course, but maybe keeping everything in one place and on one platform is just as good?

Hi Ivar, I stopped using the app because it doesn't show the signature line and I like to see what members have to offer here, be it a quotation or a blog.

I use safari on my ipad to log into the forum and can chose to 'watch' a thread if I want to follow it. I will not miss the app.

If the price weren't too high, I would be willing to purchase the app. It is nice to be able to access it on the mobile devices. I hadn't looked at the website in years and, when I received your email reminding me it existed, the app was a convenient option, I went from never reading the forum to looking at it almost every day. The website alone is fine though---with the Camino's increasing popularity, people will surely find their way to the website too.

For those of you who will transition from the App to a browser on an iPhone, you can add an App-like Forum icon to your Home Screen:

    1. Open your favorite Forum page in a browser.

    2. Tap the center icon on the screen. This icon looks like an arrow rising from a square (see image).

    3. Tap add to Home Screen (see image).

I use the app on iPad and iPhone almost 100%' but until seeing your post Ivar, I was doing it rather than go into another room to use my PC. (Easier ). We live and learn !

But like everyone else above is noting., stopping the app,, won't stop me using my iPad and iPhone .

Just added a link to my desktop. So I'm now set and ready when u pull the plug.

Glad I tuned in and found out of the pending change to the app; before flying out though; otherwise may have been wondering why I couldn't get anything. Lol.

My thanks also for a great site.

Is there a handy link in the web version to "unread posts"? That's my starting point in the app. It's invaluable.

Bill..yes look for "new posts ". It works the same as unread if you are signed in.

Ivar..I dropped the app for the browser version on my iPad and iPhone.

It has a much more complete function than the app and is as easy to access and use.
I think that other app users will find it a good thing and like it.

Discontinuing the IOS app will be the end of my participation in the forum.

Why? I just added the site to my home screen on my iPad and iPhone and it functions as if it was an app.

image.jpg So, here is the home screen on my iPad, with the website automatically set to open on the forum, with me already logged in. It's the obvious icon with the yellow arrow, left hand side. Works a treat.

Thanks for asking Ivar. I fall in the camp which says that anything that costs you money as well as your time is quite possibly not a good idea. I think your reasoning about why it would not be advisable to charge is a very valid one. I have an android phone. When using the browser I can open new pages. When I start the browser it shows me the pages as I last accessed them (unless I delete them individually). So as long as I don't delete the page it is always there for me - I don't need to type the web address. Therefore I don't need the ap and so I don't use it. I am sure that we will all respect your decision and continue to be grateful for your support for our caminos.

I use the APP daily but I would not stop using the forum if the APP was discontinued - rather it might slow down how often I browse discussions. I find the APP had limited functionality so it was just like reading the paper for me - keeping current. I would pay for it but no more than a few dollars. Hope this helps.

I haven't been a member of the community that long. I use the app on ipad simply because it was there. I would have no issues accessing it via browser and as you stated not all the features are available in the app.

When I am at home, next to my computer, the website is fine. On the walk, however, I assume the app will be more convenient. Laszlo

    Hi, Ivar.

I use the App every day but will not be inconvenienced in the least by using the browser version (which I prefer) instead.

I appreciate this forum and your efforts in managing it very much. Thank you!

    Best regards,

For those of you who will transition from the App to a browser on an iPhone, you can add an App-like Forum icon to your Home Screen:
    1. Open your favorite Forum page in a browser.
    2. Tap the center icon on the screen. This icon looks like an arrow rising from a square.
    3. Tap add to Home Screen.

Thanks "Leaning Forward! Just did it and deleted the App on my iPhone.

Thanks Ivar for all of the work you do and support you provide.

I don't own a cell phone and still not sure what an "app" of any kind specifically does. I have been given a couple of iPod touches with "wee-fee" ability which comes in handy in travels at times. I simply log on to the world-wide-web (;)) and access this site when not at home.

So I am good if you eliminate. Thank you for asking and thank you for providing us with such a valued community here.

    Keep a smile,
    Simeon

I use this app a lot, however it is some times difficult to navigate around, and so I switch to the web. Either way love this site and I'm sure any one who uses the app will have no issues going on to the web instead :)

I'm new to the forum, came to it via my laptop, now use the android app most of the time. The website configured for mobile device is 100% OK with me - whatever it takes to keep this fabulous forum going! ! BTW I had wondered why I couldn't find things on the app that are on the forum. Thought it was me :) Thanks for clearing that up and thank you, Ivar, for all you do!

Probably had plenty to do with my lack of technical prowess, but I didn't have much luck with the App earlier this year when on the camino-maybe I was just searching for the "missing" stuff.
Anyway, I am heading back next week and had already planned to stick with the browser. Many thanks for all your hard work Ivar!

I only ever access the forum on my phone, but to be honest I don't know if I am using the app or the browser. I have two icons on my phone. One outlined in black ( the one I use all the time ) and one outlined in blue (which I don't use because I don't like the way it works ). Any idea which is which ? I assume one if them I installed via the web as described above.

Ivar, I use the app about 95% of the time. I love its convenience and for me its ease of use. I would sure miss it. Of course, you have to pay the bills and if the app is not financially feasible then I can see how it would need to be retired. I hope there is a solution that works out for all. Either way I'll keep checking the forum one way or another. Thx for opening the conversation to the forum.

If you can see this logo at the top of each page, then you are in the right spot:
    2014-forum-logo.png

If you don't see it, you are most likely in the app. Click here to see the webversion that will (of course) alwauys be abvaliable:

Ok - so I seem to have naturally chosen the browser over the app as the better way for me anyway. So - cool, I'm happy with that, and it is very easy to install a phone icon that takes you right there anyway. So much so I didn't know which was which !!!

I am using the tapatalk... Oh dear it is the app you are considering to discontinue. I do like the black back grown and white letters, so much easier on my eyes.
However, I will adjust to the white background and black letters!

Well, here is the final message in respect of the App:
"Tapatalk is disabled in this forum, please contact the forum administrator for more."
So now we can happily converse on Option B which works perfectly well on all our gadgets.
    Cheers, Ivar:p

This may have already been asked Ivar.
Does the normal version have a listing of 'participated threads'? Like the app version.

Also wondering if when I open the thus normal version whether conversation always starts at the beginning? and I can't really identify which I've read ?

Nothing really life threatening but thought I'd enquire ?

I was one who found the forum through the iTunes App Store... Not sure how long it would have taken me to find it if I was just browsing the web.
I am so glad I did find the forum, and I am now enjoying using the browser instead of the App. I am guilty of checking it more than once a day....and I still have two years before we do our camino!

to anyone with an iPad or iPhone if you select add to home screen then an App icon is added that will bring you into the browser version..

so if you have a place in the forum that you visit a lot, then open this and then add to home screen. Its basically the same thing as the app.

The app does not load anymore.. So I presume it is over? I will use this method as it works. I just love the forum, so informative .

    Dear all,

I know that "Mobile Notifications" was one thing that app did well, and that the current forum website does not have.

    I am working on this.

One solution that seems to work for those using the Chrome browser on a computer is this one:
    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/forum-alerts/leiehnemnmkljaaahpadjodmghkhlhjj

I am working on a solution for Safari users (computer, iPhone and iPad), the idea would be to connect the forum notification with the Notification Center on iOS. In a few weeks I will try to have ready:
    • Camino Forum notifications (Notification Center) for those using the Safari browser on a mac computer.
Once iOS8 for iPhone and iPad is out in september/October I am hoping that this will also make me able to send notifications to these devices. Since it is not out yet, I am not 100% sure how this will work yet.

So in short, although the app is gone, new things are on its way. :)

    Have a good weekend!
    Ivar

So discontinuing "the app" also means discontinuing Tapatalk access to the forum? That's a pity! Taking this forum with me all the time was the reason for buying Tapatalk. So I will have to return to the browser... Thanks anyway for your efforts Ivar!

Personally I used to read the forum almost exclusively in the tapatalk app, iPhone and IPad.
Now I have to use a browser, my visits to the forum are much diminished.
I feel it is a lesser experience, not every browser plays well with the forum ( vice versa ? ), and the scrolling is much less pleasant in browser.
But hey ho, I acknowledge your decisions.

If costs were not an issue, would you bring it back ?

Tapatalk had some serious security issues as well. Since it had full access it the forum it made me very nervous that the whole thing could "go south". As of now the only alternative would be to develop something myself (sub contract). That would be expensive, but I am looking into it.

The Android version on my Samsung Tablet is giving problems.

Do I remove/uninstall it and then try and use this website?

    Thank you.

You can just uninstall the forum app since it is no longer in use. Access the forum by using this link:
    https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/
..in Chrome (or your mobile browser).
