We leave for Spain this Sunday. Taking a rental car to JFK from Virginia. A bit worried because of threats of snow Sunday. If all goes well we will make it to Zamora and spend the next two weeks as hospitaleros in the municipal albergue, so if you are walking the VdP stop in and say hi or stay. So looking forward to this!

@crhutch I am definitely planning to stop there but think we will be too late to catch you; we don't start walking from Salamanca until about the 21 April. So looking forward to Zamora; seems to be a favourite city for many. Hope you have a great time, and thank you for volunteering.

Oh, Zamora!!! What other city has 27 (or is it 26, or 29) romanesque churches?

For all you Vdlp-ers, if you have the time, a church not to be missed is Santiago de los Caballeros. It is outside the castle walls, (take the gate out nearest to the cathedral) a teeny tiny Romanesque church, no one ever goes there. Check the hours, but I have always found it open in the afternoon. It is reported to be the church where El Cid once spent the night praying before going into battle. It is one of my favorite places on any Camino. Beautiful capitals, beautiful arches. Sitting in that place, just you and your thoughts, contemplating your humanity and your mortality, it is not to be missed.

In my enthusiasm for Zamora's many charms I forgot my main message -- to thank you for volunteering so that the rest of us can enjoy these albergue jewels!

Wishing you a wonderful stay (and if you find you get hooked on these ancient churches, San Pedro de La Nave, about 24 km away, is incredible --visogothic, so even older! )
