I'm heading down to Colorado tomorrow to visit with my son, Caleb (Camino partner) in the Denver area. Among other things, we will be doing some trail time over next week, including 'bagging' some of the 14,000+ foot (4268 meter) peaks along the way.

Basically 'bagging' a 14er is not a hugely technical endeavor, but it is a good challenge cardio wise. :)

We are thinking that we'll cover about 125 miles before we head down to a trailhead to meet our return ride.

Attire is primarily what I have posted before on the Forum and what I usually take on Camino.

Baseweight for the backpack, which is configured for backpacking and includes tent, air mattress, stove, cooking and eating mug, etc is about 13 pounds. With consumables of food, fuel, etc, for 5 days, the total pack weight climbs to 18.5 pounds/8.4 kg.

The biggest concern when in the Rockies are the afternoon thunder storms. They happen almost every afternoon, arriving quickly and usually lasting anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. You get used to expecting them :)

I will be spending a day and a half driving down on a road trip instead of flying. I plan on making a stop in Logan Utah and visiting ULA and taking a look at some of their newest backpack gear. Plus I have to pick up a backpack (the Photon) from them which has had some proposed design changes added and made into a prototype. I will be using it as my backpack on the trip, conducting some testing for ULA.

Hey, who says fun and business can't mix?

Apparently, the pack is in that darned cherry red color that I ended up rejecting when I bought a new Circuit backpack from them earlier this year. Yup, the one that was the subject of a thread on the Forum :)

At any rate, I will try and post from Denver as I have time. I am a bit nervous, and a whole lot of curious as to how I will perform on this hike after my recovery from surgery and illness. 😮

I wish you a great time, @davebugg. I understand the feeling about wondering how it’ll go now you have recovered.
Keep us posted and all the very best,
Dominique

Well, you have your choice of over 50 of them!!
I had to bail out of a hike up Ajax in Telluride which is only about 12,700. And that was after some good conditioning on a Camino. Just could not get acclimated.
Enjoy!!

"Climb high, sleep low" was our mantra when I was in climbing ;)

Meaning that you put up the tent and then ascend few hundreds meters more and then return to your camp. It helps!

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
Safe trip Dave. Glad your recovery is going so well.

Wishing you a stateside Buen Camino DaveBugg! I am in the same boat regarding my return to the Portuguese Camino (I had to leave in April due to injury). I leave 9/8/19. Still undecided about wearing closed toed shoes or Chacos. Leaning towards the Chacos. Having had big toe infections back in April from warmer temps, thicker socks, swollen feet...well, I just don’t relish the idea of any friction on my nailbeds which are only beginning to show signs of new nail growth! Wishing you and Caleb good weather, solid footing, and ample opportunities to create lasting memories. We will all look forward to hearing about your adventures.
