Train Derailment at Santiago

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Re: Train De Railment ...

It's very serious.

From Wikepedia...

The Santiago de Compostela train accident occured on 24 July 2013 at about 20:45 local time (18:45 UTC) in Santiago de Compostela, Spain when a train from the line Madrid - Ferrol derailed. At least 12 people were killed.[1]

I have always enjoyed the rail service in Spain, and in Galicia particularly, and found the staff helpful and very tolerant of this pilgrims poor Spanish.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Edit - 21.56
Now reported as worst train accident in Spain in 40 years. A terribly poignant St James Day tomorrow.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Re: Train De Railment ...

Edit - removed link to El Pais .SJ>

A Alvia train derailed just at the entrance to the station of Santiago de Compostela. This is the line linking Madrid and Ferrol and at least ten bodies are scattered around the track covered with blankets. All remain overturned train cars at the height of the viaduct Angrois AP-9 and fire emergency services and move to the crash site at the entrance to the capital of Galicia from the south. The penultimate car is wrecked. Two train passengers injured, one with a collar and the other uninjured, relate that felt like the train took the curve, the next thing I remember is that they were on the floor "surrounded by dead". Witnesses described horrific scenes and fear that the number of people killed may rise. The wounded are dozens.

The event occurs at the beginning of the bridge Galicia Day and night where James lives his big party acts that have already been suspended. The train, which traveled about 240 people, has derailed on a sharp curve. The machine is blazing back and another flew over an embankment to five meters high and 15 away from the track.

"There are many people dead here, my god!" Cry just a neighbor in the area through the Radio Galega. The bodies and state security forces are beginning to organize to assist victims and investigate what caused the derailment of the train Alvia covering the route between Madrid and Ferrol. The locals have told Europa Press that they heard an explosion about 2040 hours. The derailment occurred at kilometer 84.3 on the route of the AVE Ourense-Santiago. The engine of one of the machines, one mole immense, was thrown by the impact. Firemen and policemen are currently attempting to rescue people who are in the interior of the carriages affected, which could be around 13.

Even the scene where you can see a column of smoke intense, are shifting the Government Delegate, Samuel Juarez, and the deputy of the Government in La Coruna, Jorge Atan. Just come to the area the Regional Minister for the Environment, Land and Infraestruturas, Agustin Hernandez, and has come also the mayor of the capital of Galicia, Angel Currás.

Pilgrims in Santiago...please go to the Hospital Clinico and offer to donate blood as it is URGENTLY needed. There are at the time of writing at least 70 seriously injured. There are also 30 dead. Your donation might help that terrible number from being more.

Train De Railment ...

I am in Santiago and headed to the Cathedral at 9:00 PM to view this evening's festivities and light show only to be turned around-- they have cancelled the St. James festival due to the tragic train crash. There is an uncertain energy in the city as pilgrims and and locals try and grasp the tragedy. Local news, as well as BBC are reporting 35 casualties. I'm deeply saddened by the news and have begun to feel the local devastation.

the latest unofficial death toll given on Voz de Galicia is at least 40 with at least 50 injured. Still provisional, as at midnight local time rescue workers have still not gained access to all the carriages

The Xunta confirms more than 45 deaths on TV right now and about 70 wounded... very very sad everything.

It seems they need blood of type 0-.

Re: Train De Railment ...

From The Times.

At least 77 people were killed and 143 injured - including one Briton - when a high-speed train careered off the rails in Spain last night and burst into flames.
The crash - the country’s worst In 41 years - happened when 13 carriages of the train from Madrid heading for the naval port of El Ferrol, with 218 passengers on board, left the tracks 3km outside Santiago de Compostela, in the northwestern region of Galicia.
Investigators said excess speed was the most probable cause, but stressed that the inquiry was at an early stage. The speed limit on that section of the track is 80kph (50 mph). The train had been travelling so fast that one of its carriages flew over the embankment and landed on a road above.
Witnesses confirmed that it had sped through a bend. “It was going so quickly . . . It seems that on a curve the train started to twist, and the carriages piled up one on top of the other,” Ricardo Montesco, a passenger, told Cadena Ser radio station.
“A lot of people were squashed on the bottom. We tried to squeeze out of the bottom of the carriages to get out and we realised the train was burning. I was in the second carriage and there was fire. I saw corpses.” Abel Rivas, 25, was among the first residents who came out of their homes to try to help the wounded.
“We heard a tremendous noise, enormous, like nothing else. We went down and we saw the train had been completely smashed,” he told Efe news agency. “We saw a huge cloud of smoke and one of the carriages was on fire. We saw injured people trying to get children out.”
Spanish television showed the bodies of some of the dead covered with blankets lying next to the mangled remains of the derailed carriages. There was a dense cloud of smoke above the wreckage.
A spokesman for the regional government’s office described the derailment, which happened at 8.42 pm local time, as an accident, but it will stir memories of the train bombing in Madrid in 2004, by Islamists, that killed 191 people.
The crash came less than two weeks after a French passenger train derailed just south of Paris, killing six people and injuring 30 more.
Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the Galician regional president, described the scene as “Dantesque”. “There are bodies lying on the railway track. There are also people whose lives are hanging in the balance in the operating theatre,” he said. “There is one carriage that has been crushed by another and emergency services have not been able to access it yet.”
Xaime López, a journalist for Cadena Ser radio, was clearly shaken when relating the tragedy to listeners. “Passengers said they were piled on top of each other inside the carriages. The road is full of bodies, full of bodies. It is really shocking.”
As rescue services worked to free passengers who were still trapped in the wreckage, the University Hospital in Santiago de Compostela issued an urgent appeal for blood donors to come forward because its stocks were low.
Mariano Rajoy, the Spanish Prime Minister, who was born in Santiago de Compostela, tweeted: “I want to express my affection and solidarity with the victims of the terrible train accident in Santiago.” He is due to visit the site this morning.
The city, which is the site of an annual pilgrimage to the tomb of St James by Catholics from across the world, was about to celebrate its summer festival. City authorities cancelled the festival, which was due to start today on St James’s Day, as a mark of respect to the victims.
This was the first serious accident to hit the AVE high-speed train service, which has revolutionised travel across Spain by offering cheap tickets for fast journeys across the country.
The AVE network was the pride of the previous Socialist Government which ploughed billions of euros into it during a decade-long building boom.
It is likely to be sold off by the present centre-right Government to help pay off debts accrued by loss-making regional lines.Yesterday’s crash was one of the worst rail disasters in modern Spanish history. In 1972, 77 people were killed in a derailment in Andalusia in the south and seven years ago, a metro train veered off the tracks in Valencia, killing 43.
The worst of all time for Spain is thought to be the Torre del Bierzo rail disaster which happened in January 1944 after three trains collided inside a tunnel. Officially 78 died in the crash however more recent studies believe the death toll may have been as many as 500 people.

Thoughts and prayers to those who have died and their families... RIP..So very tragic...

To everyone from countries who censor their news, especially the UK, I feel it is important to mention that the Spanish (and other European) news websites covering this story carry many shocking, disturbing photos of the aftermath of this terrible event. I believe it is important to always have the full story but please be mindful of this when trying to find news online.

Buen Camino everyone.

I heard the news late last night before going to bed. I am still in shock. I cannot imagine the grief in Santiago at the moment, but the reports of the extraordinary generosity and heroism of the volunteers and residents of Santiago in responding to the tragedy that are emerging in the news are tremendously heartening. It is surely a miracle of St. James.

As a friend of mine posted on Facebook in response to news of the tragedy, “May St. James greet (those who have died) at the gates of Heaven, where they can embrace him in person, rather than just his bust in the cathedral.”

Réquiem ætérnam dona eis Dómine; et lux perpétua lúceat eis. Requiéscant in pace.

Navarricano - Thank you for that. I find the extraordinary human compassion on display is far more nourishing than the rush to judgement in the haste to find a scapegoat. It is regrettable that the interconnected digital world means trial by media.
Strength for the living, whoever they maybe.

Santiago is very somber and quiet (even the bagpipe has been silenced) it is a city in shock. Many Pilgrims had timed their way to end with celebrations on St James day, they are confused, they are more reserved on their arrival, it is difficult to know how to celebrate the journey of their lives but still remain respectful of the tragedy that has occurred .

I have posted this on other vacation forums but it maybe of help to those of you who still need to use the train to get either to or from Galicia.
Please read the RENFE website for current updates.
http://www.renfe.com/empresa/comunicaci ... ncias.html
The notices published here will be more up to date that I will be able to manage.
So far the trains have been rerouted and this can be found in the notices
"PLAN ALTERNATIVO DE TRANSPORTE POR INTERCEPTACION DE VIA ENTRE ORENSE Y SANTIAGO POR ACCIDENTE DE ALVIA 151 MADRID-FERROL"
and
"AVE - LARGA DISTANCIA Renfe ha establecido un Plan Alternativo de Transporte para familiares para viajar desde Madrid a Galicia "
I think the timetable situation will be fluid.
My advise is that if you are easily shocked please do not read any Spanish press. It is very normal here to show what some may call graphic or intrusive details in reports and photos.
I would like to also pass on my thanks to the heroes of this situation: The persons who live near to the accident, who helped rescue passengers, and laid out bedding and gave food and shelter to everyone. The firemen from neighbouring A Coruña who broke their strike and came to a neighbouring city; to all of the emergency services who have had to deal with, what I can only image were, scenes of devastation.
Thankfully the train services here in Spain are safe I hope they remain that way.

no, and that's not likely to change. One of the advantages of modern trains is that people reserve seats, so you know who is on board.

The latest from the autopsies is that 75 of the bodies have been released to the families, but they still have problems with a further 3. Definitive identification of these could take days or even weeks.

My sympathies to all affected by this terrible event. At such times we think of the families of those in the crash and offer prayers for them and the theirs. But also we must think of all the others affected, especially those emergency and medical people involved. Yes the crash has affected many, in Santiago and elsewhere, so we need to think of those too. I feel sorry for all pilgrims arriving at this time as their joy at arriving is marred in such a way. My thanks go to all in the Pilgrims Office who must be having a very difficult time themselves but still continue to help the Pilgrims.
Bless all who have and are helping others at this time.

Tracey started a thread about 2 minutes silence at the time of the formal funeral tonight (Mon 29th) at 19.00 (Spanish time) which many of us will be observing. I have also posted a link there to the Spanish site which will be relaying the service live or by 'catch-up' - for those who wish to share in this.

there's also an invitation to light a candle at 19.00 as a symbol not only of solidarity but also to signify that there is light at the end of the tunnel http://www.lavozdegalicia.es/noticia/ga ... 248430.htm

Thank you for that Peter. We lit our candle and put it in the window while we watched the service. It is now on rtve.es, currently as headline news.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Ivar,

Is there any way that this forum could start a donation for the victims of the train crash, many of those still alive are suffering in many ways.

the BBC have put a brief extract on their site http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-23486048 though it's been pushed off the front page by other things

Photos on Voz de Galicia from both inside and outside of the cathedral - the service was relayed on a large screen in Quintana to what looks to me like a couple of thousand people

Hi there,

I am not sure if this has been set up (I have not seen anything in the papers here). We could set up something in the forum, but we need to know where to send the money once we have it collected... and I don't know if they have organized themselves yet to be able to receive. I will keep an eye open for this.

Saludos,
Ivar

not sure that money's what's needed at the moment. AFAIA there's not been any call for donations. Renfe is paying compensation/accident insurance to the injured and to the families of the dead http://www.lavozdegalicia.es/noticia/ga ... 200585.htm

[sorry, posted before seeing Ivar's response]
